Baby fussing while eating

Baby fussing while eating

It's been awhile since I've posted. My son Aidan is now 3weeks old. I have been breastfeeding, and lately he starts fussing and crying like he is in pain during his feedings.

My dr told me to pump for 4 days and put him on alimentum. The first day was good, not fussing and I saw a change in his personality. Today is day 3 and yesterday he started up again crying during his feedings.

It breaks my heart, I never thought that babies would cry with pain while feeding, I always that feeding time should be a calming time.

Has anyone else experienced this. TIA

Also, now Aidan has gone from pooping 5x a day to 1. He hasn't gone today yet, but he looks like he's trying so hard and then starts crying. Any suggestions to help in go?

I am honestly not sure why your Dr recommended you to pull from BF, even for 4 days. There are other options to try like the elimination diet. Typically a BF baby isn't allergic to milk...

Do you have a lot of milk? Sometimes an avenue is to only BF from one side of the breast for each feeding, or sometimes a couple in a row to make sure the baby is getting the proper hindmilk/foremilk composition. Too much hindmilk can cause gas.

I think some fussing is normal during either BF or FF. Gabriella use to fuss a lot when she was tired and I just tried to work around it.

I definitely think that if you want to continue to BF, that you go back to doing so. I can pull some links for you, if interested about hindmilk/foremilk and the elimination diet. Also, keep in mind, you could get the professional advice of a LC who could guide you through this.

I have heard that acid reflux can cause babies to cry and fuss while feeding. Also, there is something called esophagitis. [According to the definition, reflux of acid from the stomach can sometimes cause the esophagus to become inflamed. Infants with esophagitis will usually have problems and refuse to eat, spit up blood or become very irritable while eating.]

I hope your little one is feeling better soon!

I had the exact thing with my daughter and she was suffering from extreme gas as well as acid reflux, but she would throw up as soon as she was full. There is something called 'silent reflux' which means that no throw up is produced but the acid comes up the stomach and esophogus into the throat and then goes back down, this is suppose to be even worse than regular reflux since th eacid is not expelled, it just sits in their gut and burns their little belly' throats, etc.
Make sure he is burped every few minutes when you're feeding him (every 5 min) this way you can rule out if it is just gas. Most importantly demand that ypur doctor evaluate him more indepthly. Let me know if you need any more info.

My dr said that it sounds like he has acid reflux, but wanted to try this formula before having him take a test for reflux.

If he's trying alimentum, he must think your son has an allergy. My doc put my daughter on zantac FIRST and then re-evaluated her and when I said how much improve she was, it was a done deal that it was reflux. Maybe you should ask for a prescription of Zantac befoore you stop breastfeeding, or take al the dairy out of your diet to see if he has a milk allergy.
