Bad news and a couple of questions...

Original post by Eireann

I got the results of my Integrated test this morning. My risk of having a Down's baby is comparatively very high. The normal range for a person of my age is about 1/550 and my range is 1/5. Needless to say, I'm devastated by this news, but trying to keep in mind that there's an 80% chance my baby is healthy. I have already scheduled an amnio for Friday morning.

So, I was wondering if any of you or friends/family have such an elevated risk and what the outcomes were. We have one acquaintance whose son has Down's, but this couple did not opt for the tests and were taken unaware.

Also, does anyone know what the amnio is like? My SIL had it due to age, but it didn't seem like such a big deal.

Lastly, I would appreciate it if you would think of us in your prayers.

Thank you.

Re: Bad news and a couple of questions...

First of all . I opted for an amnio because the test can read false positive for multiples.

I actually had 2 (as each baby was in a separate placenta) at the same time.

For me, it wasn't as bad as I had imagined. While it was done, I watched the ultrasound screen, where the one doctor kept a running update on all he was seeing. This was really helpful to me, because it distracted me from seeing the needle. And he was able to rule out alot of what was being tested for just by the visual. Meanwhile, the other (my OB/GYN) was inserting the needles. I really didn't feel any pain, other than the initial pinch. Both Doctors made me very comfortable and DH was right there holding my hand.

I will say that the 2nd needle was uncomfortable upon withdrawal. Not painful, but sort of a strange feeling. Then you have to spend the rest of the day off your feet.

I'm sorry you are going through this - I am sending you my thoughts and prayers. If it were me, I would probvably do the amnio just to know, be prepared, etc. However, whatever you choose will be the right choice for you. Good luck!

I had recieved the same news as a result of my AFP test with my son - It is awful, you go through so many emotions, but when I talked to the genetic counsler and found out that there was also a risk to having the amnio as well, I opted to cancel my appointment and wait out the rest of my pregnancy.

This is what happened to my sister in law and in the end, she had a healthy baby.

I'm sorry all this is making you worry. There are always false positives with these tests. My doctor offered me an amnio due to my age, but he actually didn't recommend it. I have heard of things going wrong with the amnio and the way my doctor put it to me was 'What would you do if you found out that something was wrong?' I know I would keep the baby no matter what, so I didn't take the risk of the amnio.

It's a personal decision that only you and your husband can make. I know many people who've had amnios with absolutely no problems.

I wish you all the best!

My sister's best friend had a very very high risk that something was wrong with her baby, and he came out fine. I will say prayers for you, but just stay calm until the amnio!

I just wanted to thank everyone for their warm wishes and support.

We have decided to keep the amnio appt. I hope that the results will allow us to complete the second half of the pregnancy in peace and if the results aren't what we hope, then I know we can begin to prepare for the future. It's going to be a LONG two weeks!

Thanks again

Re: Bad news and a couple of questions...

I just wanted to let you know that one of our friend's were told that their baby had a 1/34 chance of having down syndrome. And we had another friend who was told that their baby may be so mentally disabled that the kid would most likely be institutionalized. Of course, they were worried sick and did the amnio. They both have perfectly healthy children. Those tests can be so wrong and scare the heck out of people worrying sick about their little babies.
Good luck with your amnio.
