Bagpipes...please explain

Bagpipes...please explain

My fiance and I are thinking of surprising his mom w/ bagpipes at our ceremony since she is from Scotland and we have a bunch of people from Scotland coming for our wedding. My question is when do the bagpipers play, where are they physically, and for how long do they play? Being the nice Italian girl that I am, I have no idea about any of this. Also, any bagpiper recommendations would be much appreciated in either western nassau county, or queens. Thanks ladies!

I had toyed with the idea of having bagpipes at my wedding. What I was going to do was have them play outside the church both before and after the wedding as people enter and as everyone gathers outside the church for the send-off. I cannot remember the information of the person I spoke with, but I got the information off of www.libagpipes.com. (I decided to put the money I was going to use for the bagpipes towards hiring a string quartet).

I don't know about how its done inScotland (you might want to let one ofthe relatives in on your plan to find out), but my family usually has someone (actually my uncle) play the bagpipes at weddings. He plays before and after the ceremony right outside the church. If you want to surprise his mom you might be able to use it when your BP is walking down the isle, but I would see if you can find someone to try it out in your church/ceremony location before doing this, becuase if it the place is not big enough, the bagpipes can sound quite obnoxious

Have you thought about contacting the Police departments? Many have piper organizations? I am getting 2 pipers and 1drummer from The Eastern Long Island Bagpipers Division. Good Luck! I am sure she'll love it!

I too have seen them play before the church reception and after.

I'm having bagpipes at my wedding. They will play in front of the church while my guests are arriving and after our ceremony while everyone is waiting for us to exit the church and while we're taking photos.

I'm using the bagpipes from the Roman Catholic Church in Bay Shore, right on Main Street. They're really nice there.

They told me not to have them play in the church because it can sound very obnoxious in there.

They will travel to my church because I'm not getting married at that particular church.

I think it adds a nice touch to any Scottish or Irish wedding...or any wedding for that matter!

I second what MrsS2Be said -- my priest actually mentioned that because of the aucoustics the sound of the bagpipes ends up being VERY overpowering/obnoxtious. IMO - the before & after ideas are the way to go.

Our bagpipers are going to play towards the end of the cocktail hour-kind of a way to lead people to dinner.

I agree-not a good idea inside the church. Even in a reception hall, they are LOUD!

we are going to have them play outside before the ceremony as the guests arrive, and then afterwards when we are taking pictures as we leave and everyone is outside.
Question, i can't remember, after the bridal party exits, does the music (in the church) stop, or do they keep playing as guests leave?

I think it keeps playing. But the bagpipe usually over powers it!
