How does everyone feel about having a DJ instead of a band? My FH thinks having a DJ is trashy but we can't find a band we like.

Re: Band or DJ???
i don't think that having a dj is trahsy, but i have been to some weddings where the band is horrible. i've rarely been to a wedding where the dj was horrible. these days, with the expense of a good band many people are opting for a dj. i told my dj that i essentially want him to 'sound' like a band. i don't want real techno dance music, but similar music to what a band would play. it also depends on your budget.

I'm going the DJ route myself. So many of us are big dancers. We like 70's music, dance music etc. I feel like DJs can play whatever you want to hear and it sounds like what you're used to hearing. Some bands are just not good at that and it ruins a party.

Hi craig and gloria - talked to craig the other day and said congrats but didn't get to say congrats to you!
I don't think a dj is tacky at all. I think it depends on what 1) your preference 2) your style.
I think it depends largely on what band or what dj you pick.
Also some people are not happy unless they hear the actual artist sing the song - for those people a dj is probably best.
If you are looking for a broad range of types of music (maybe music in a couple different languages)- then you might be better with a dj - but that is not necessarily true.
I think you need to evaluate your budget and then research both avenues to deside which you feel fits your individual style best - IMO I have been to elegant weddings that have dj's and elegant weddings with bands.
We chose a band - because we found one that we thought was fabulous. If we hadn't found a great band we probably would have gone with a dj. I do prefer live music so that helped us make our choice -

We are doing the DJ also!! We personally arent crazy about bands.. they cost alot and they are super loud.. we like the real songs if you know what I mean.. maybe b/c were young and most the people at the wedding will be around our age.. and we cant 'appreciate' bands. Good Luck whatever you do! PS - We havent gotten one negative comment about having a DJ when people have asked - most the people we talked to were really happy about it! ( everyone in FI's family uses bands)

I personallu think that bands are a big waste of money(I used to sing in one) They never sound like the recording and some people like hearing a song the way they know it. When you have a live band you have to change the song a bit because each singers key is different and in doing so, you lose something.......JMO

Re: Band or DJ???
we're having a band. Code Bleu from Skyline Orchestras. Originally we were planning on having a dj because i'd never heard a band i liked...until we went to my cousin's wedding and their band was AMAZING!!! they sounded great - the songs sounded just like the real artists and they had everyone up on the dancefloor without even trying. by the time we left the wedding, we knew that we would have that band at our wedding.....and we weren't even engaged yet! it's a personal decision. there are bands that are great and there are bands that are awful (i've heard those too) it's the same thing for dj's....they can go either way... so it's what you can afford (because bands are much more expensive....)
good luck with your choice!

I think that both bands and DJs have their plusses and minues. With a DJ, you get to hear the actual recording, that you are familiar with, and you will have a wider repertoire to choose from. That said, I still feel like a good band is somewhat classier, since you have live performers. You are paying more of course, but you are paying for talent. It's really all a matter of what is important to you. Whichever you choose, make sure that you have a good person MCing. I've had a great time at weddings with DJs and with Bands.
