I'm not sure what we should do...I think that having live music is awesome at a wedding, but I'm told that a band could cost thousands more than a DJ. I just don't know if we can afford that. Anyone have advice or recommendations??

Re: Band or DJ???
do a search ...you will find many threads on bands and djs and you will be able to get a better idea...
I love a band at a wedding-but yes it will cost more than a DJ. There are some wonderful djs out there too-that you can add certain band pieces, like a drum, or trumpet...you get the best of both worlds...
my band was heart and soul and I thought they were wonderful
A DJ I saw and loved and would have booked if we did not get a band, was Long Island Sound. Bravura I have heard is really good too!
ETA- H and S was able to do such a variety (and did a great job at it) they even learned songs for us, the mother/son dance was in spanish- they learned it, our intro song was Every time we touch by cascada-they learned it-and they sounded awesome....

I usually prefer a DJ when I go to weddings, but I have heard some great bands. My DJ was great (Music by Michael). You can always add live musicians with the DJ.

We did a band and the older people at the wedding (which we had more of) loved it, but I could tell the younger crowd was waiting for the club music and the band we had didnt do any hip hop and dance music. I think it depends on the tone of the party you want to have and the crowd.

We had a DJ, there were certain songs we just had to hear done by the original artist.

Re: Band or DJ???
The band I went with is Peter Greco... They are EXCELLENT and also happened to be the least expensive. BUT it's still a couple thousand more than you would spend on a DJ. FM me for any questions

I prefer a DJ and so do my pockets Also I like the variety you can have such as salsa one minute then reggae the frank Sinatra. Also I like hearing songs sung by the orignal artist.

If you have the budget go for a band. I love live music at a wedding, it makes it feel special. Dj's are at every kind of party you go to. Hiring a band is 'hopefully' a once in a lifetime event.

I prefer a band personally - if it fits in your budget. You really have to shop around to get a good price, though!
And there's nothing wrong with having a DJ - many people prefer it!

Re: Band or DJ???
Take into account the size of your space, and the time of day. If your reception room is on the small side, a band will overpower the room and the people. And a single DJ might get lost in a huge hall (unless they've got an emcee and additional pieces.
If you're getting married on a Saturday night with a full house, then a band is the rockin' way to go, but a quiet Sunday afternoon in a garden with 65 people doesn't warrant a full band...you know?
A lower-end band might only be $1,500 more than a hig-end dj. It's worth checking out, because then you'll know, at the very least, what your options are.
Oh, and one other thing--you'll need to feed the band, so you'll have to factor in that cost on top of their fee. If it's a six-person band, that can run into a lot of money, especially if you're on a tight budget. Some places offer a discount for vendors' meals, some throw it in for free if the vendor has been recommended by said reception place...but you should double check that too.

This is the argument for a DJ. Many times now a days DJs have 'live performers' as options in their packages. So a mini band with a DJ. Not something I'm interested in, but if you want the best of both worlds I guess it wouldn't be a bad idea.

Try Majic Event Music.. its actually one of the vendors here. There's a promotion now: for a 5-piece band they only charge $2,500. I heard they live.. they're great!!

Re: Band or DJ???
I have a huge family, so our wedding guests will be mostly family- I was thinking the same thing with the older vs. younger crowd-it's going to be more on the older side, so a band is probably more appropriate...but then there's the money thing.

Re: Band or DJ???
I think it is really a personal preference. For FH and I we knew we wanted a band from the beginning. We saw our band, Soul Revival, at a friends wedding and thought they were amazing. They sounded great playing all the music and now a few of our other friends are booking them too. I know $ makes a huge difference too, and for some bands are just out of their budget. For us, we just made it a priority to have a band, but are cutting back on flowers (not as important for me). However, our band is very reasonably priced so that helps. Here is the link to their website Soul Revival website
