We are really stalling on the music portion of planning. We really LOVE Bravura and I really LOVE Alive N Kickin'. The band is giving us an excellent deal (circumstance that makes them only able to do a wedding on my date in the area I'm getting married) so we are getting $2500 off and free CH (calypso music - vocal and keyboard)! I also want it to be really fun and classy! So, I am curious about a few things...
Do you have more fun at band or DJ weddings? I really dont want/need house or techno music at my wedding so thats not a problem as far as music styles.
Those of you having bands, are they providing any sort of lighting? (I keep forgetting to ask )
Honest opinions please. Oh, and I cant afford a combo!! TIA!!!!!!!!!

I say if you can do a band, do it! I would love to but I would have to find exactly where that money tree is located first

Re: Band or DJ???
I picked band....BUTTTTTTT, it REALLY REALLY REALLY depends on the band.
I went to one wedding in nyc where they had a band (and I know they spent over $10,000 for this band), and it was honestly awful. We were laughing at the singer. He was beyond cheeseball and totally detratced from the music. They were singing beyonce songs and it just was TERRIBLE. Some modern songs, and some classic songs you just can't do a cover of, ya know? That being said, I think that bands really pump up the energy in the room - far more than a dj can do.
But before bands were the craze for weddings everyone had a dj and I don't remember ever going to a wedding with a dj and having a bad time (except for when they play the chicken dance, etc.).
Your guests will have fun no matter what. Just figure out what fits you guys and your budget best!

I say band but you have to get a good 1!!! Getting 1 bc they are the cheapest on the list is def not the reason!! Theres good DJs out there but i feel the food and music are VERY important. We had a band and so did my sister. I used the Projket and my sister used time square......BOTH amazing.

I think this band is excellent. I saw them at a bridal expo and was only interested in DJs because bands werent in my budget. I heard them and then i heard another 2 bands at other expos and they didnt compare! When he called me he asked about my date and RH and he said they do a gig about 5 mins away every 4th of July so they normally cant do 4th of july weddings unless they are close to their gig...so he offered me a REALLY good deal after negotiating so they can get another job in that night.

Re: Band or DJ???
I decided to go with a String Quartet for the Ceremony and Cocktail Hour, then a DJ for the reception. I find most wedding bands cant cover the songs that I know family and friends will get up and dance too...After dinner is served, I was EVERYONE on the dance floor for the rest of the night.

Re: Band or DJ???
hmmm it depends on what you really want, what type of music will be played and all that...for me personally i prefer a dj...i dont like alot of bands but i did see one band at a showcase and i thought they were excellent, only time i actually thought hmmm should we get a band?
I am gonna play a large variety of music and it will be hard to do so...I wanna play a few reggae songs, also a few hip-hop songs, were also gonna play ethnic songs and also spanish although were not spanish...plus a few rock songs.

My personal opinion is to have a dj. I am not a band type of girl, I enjoy so many varieties of music and LOVE dance and hip hop music, so dj was just the best bet for me, we also got a live percussionist to add to the effect.

If we did do a DJ we would add a percussionist and a sax player too probably to get some live music, but I don't know why I am so drawn to this band. It's not just the money, they are totally working with me and not trying to pressure me at all either. I am just hoping that I make the right decision!
Thanks ladies!!

Re: Band or DJ???
We are total band people. I have been BM's in so many weddings and have seen both DJ's and bands, to me bands are just so much fun and bring so much energy, JMO. We are using Soul Revival and they are just what we wanted. I haven't heard of Alive N Kickin' but I say go with them, bands are great

Re: Band or DJ???
I wish I could afford a band but they are not in my budget. I have a great group or guys that I would love to have but they are just a little too much and thats after lowering the price for me. I guess Im getting a DJ. I do want some sort of live music for the CH but i have to see if can afford that and if the dj wont play w/o charging me.

same here...ive heard a bunch of modern songs and they just sound weird when re-done by a band...so again like ppl have said before it depends on what kind of music u think ull have at the rh. for us personally, we want the originals to sound like the originals and im not worried about ppl getting up to dance because our families like to party!
but if ure really drawn to them and like what they play...then go for it.

Re: Band or DJ???
I am having a DJ. I think a band can give a certain element of elegance that a DJ cannot, but FH is totally opposed to a band and I don't think we could really afford a good one anyway, so I didn't fight him too hard on that one.
