I wanted a dj, there are so many songs on my list that I just can't picture a band playing. Plus, I like to hear the original singer's version...but bands are really elegant, so its definitely up to you.

We are going with a band = The Touch.
If the band is good, I think it makes the wedding much more lively and gets people up dancing more. Nothing at all against dj's, as long as they are not loud and obnoxious.
FH and I went to a million weddings over the past few years and there were a few that had bands. We felt like it added more excitement or just a little something special. Just have to make sure if you go with a band that its a good/reputable one. A bad band can be a disaster.
Another factor is that I think bands tend to cost a hell of a lot more money, so you need to take a look at what $$ you have to budget for what expenses.

at the weddings ive been to there were less people dancing when there was band. i happen to like when there is a band AND a DJ and each does a set and they go back and forth....but that was too much money for us to do! we are just getting a DJ.

we hired a drummer that will play along with the DJ - but i would have LOVED to have a cover band play in between sets.....
