in your opinion ( cost aside) which is better band or d.j? i always invisioned a band but everyone is saying how much better a d.j is because its the real people singing the song. i dont want to offend anyone and not to sound snobby- but is a d.j looked upon as not as classy? who is everyone using and why?

Although I am having a DJ...I'd prefer a band. If you get a really good one (and there are plenty of them)...they'll sound just as good as the 'real' song.

IMO I do not think a DJ is a classy as a band... PLUS live music brings a vibe to the party that a DJ cannot... that's JMO. Every wedding I ever went to with a DJ I hardly danced- but with a band- I ALWAYS dance.

Just my opinion, but I think you get more variety with a DJ. A band is probably considered more 'classy' but, if you ask me, you're basically getting the same overall sound all night. Maybe it's just my taste in music but there are certain types of music (I like so many!) that I just HAVE to dance to on my wedding day that I'd probably have to hire 4 types of bands and that's just not practical, obviously. So, I'll be going with a DJ, classy or not. And because I do like live music, a single musician or small band for just the cocktail hour (if the budget allows it).

I prefer a DJ over a band. I prefer hearing the songs sung by the original singer. I have heard some great bands though. It's a matter of personal preference and cost.
I used a DJ and MC and had a live singer perform during dinner. People really seemed to like this.

IMO a dj is better. I've always gotten up to dance when a dj is present, but I've never gotten up to dance to a band. It really is just personal preference. Go with what your gut tells you to go with, and dont worry about what your guests think. It's YOUR day!!!!!

I think a band brings something extra to a wedding that a DJ just can't. For all the people who don't dance, they have something to look at...if you have a good band, they can be very diverse.
Really, it's just a matter of preference & finances.
We're going with a 9 pc band - they've played at 2 family weddings and the dance floor was always packed. There was no 'cheese' or loud MCs (though my sisters DJ was AWESOME! - no cheese). We just really enjoyed the atmosphere and their vibe.

Definitely depends on your personal tastes/finances. I think it also depends on your guests. You know the vibe of your guests better than we do.
I know my guests would not be into a band, unless it was the REAL GROUP doing the performing. Just not our type of thing.

Re: band vs d.j?
We are having both and in my opinion, neither is better than other. I dont think that one is more classy than the other. Sometimes a band can have a certain sound and thats it. A Dj can offer a bit of everything. Thats why we are having both because our band plays one type of music that my fiances family will LOVE ( reggae / Soca)..I love this band myself, but my family may not necessarily want to dance to it all night, so we have a DJ to throw some slow sings in teh mix and alittle motown, some disco would be great also. Unless your band can play different songs from one end of the spectrum to the next, a DJ is always a smart move, and i dont think its ' not classy ' at all. DJ's are great and can be very classy. Whats NOT classy in my opinion is when they start getting up in the guests face annoying them and passing out those sunglasses.( I mean no offense if anyone likes that) Thats just my personal opinion..some people really enjoy that. Its all about what you prefer.

I am having a DJ but have to say that I would have preferred a band. Just couldn't afford one though! FH and I are paying for most of our wedding and we decided that a GOOD dj would suffice. I do like the idea that the dj plays original songs though! Also, a good DJ will keep the dance floor packed a night....if he/she is good!

I prefer a band. We are having one and we wouldn't change a thing.

For a wedding, I think that a band is better. (Although I don't think it is worth going into debt for!) If you have a good band, it creates an elegant atmosphere that no DJ can match. Good band = $$$ though, and I'd take a good DJ over a mediocre band any day.

We booked a dj ,i want to hear the songs from the original artist.A band to me is just to expensive at least the ones i looked at.We booked a dj with a live percussionist and a sax player to give that live feel, they sound great with the dj.There are many classey djs out there. Its really all personal preference i guess.Good luck with your descesion.

I love both!!!
I must admit that for more ethnic weddings a band would be better.
I love Salsa bands and reggae, socca and calypso bands.
As long as the music is good I will dance.

Re: band vs d.j?
I am just too picky to have a band. I'm a musician, and I tend to hone in on the negatives with wedding bands. I'd rather have a DJ just so I know what all the songs will sound like. But if you have the money for a phenomonal band, go for it.
