OK so we have the venue and photographer booked- next is band/dj. My FH desperately wants a band. He's been to a couple of weddings with bands and we went to a few band showcases and he just really enjoys a band over a DJ. Me, on the other hand, likes the DJ because I like the songs played by the band that plays them (ex. our first dance: I want the song to sound how it would sound on the radio..not how a band will play it)
Also, my future parent-in-law's offered to pay for a band. Since we are paying for this wedding ourselves, it would really help us out- but I would rather put the $7k they would pay for a band towards a DJ AND flowers or the limos, etc.
I am really torn- it is the only request made by my FH so I feel I should just agree and book a band... HELP!!!!

Check out After Hours! They have an AMAZING band for less than 7k! The band was still not in my budget and Phil is GREAT to work with!
Also... if you CAN sway your FH into a DJ... Phil is AWESOME. Phil might even be able to sway your FH ;)

I'd definitely get a DJ. I definitely have seen awesome bands at weddings, but I think they're way expensive. Also, I think it's better like you said to be able to hear the song the way they are originally sung. I'm totally with you on this one!

I definitely think a DJ is the way to go especially if you want some songs to be an exact version. Bands also have to take breaks so at some point they do just put music on so I felt that sort of defeated the purpose.

I'm very pro-DJ. It's a LOT less expensive, and you're getting the actual songs. Me personally, I would much rather have 2+ vendors taken care of with that 7K. Good luck!

My cousin had a band and my other cousin who is getting married in October is having a band, I personally am not a fan. I don't like when people sing versions of hit songs, just not my thing. I think it is totally personal preference and I am sure it would be great either way!

If you really want to make FH happy and book a band, see if maybe for certain songs they can just play the original arist's version (first dance, parent dances, etc.). Also, some bands will only have certain pieces take breaks at different times so that live music is constantly playing all evening.

2013-er crashing.....I was told most band members will take turns with breaks so you're never left without music.
I'd recommend the Franklin Wayne bands, they're very good and reasonably priced and Frank is a doll. Something else to keep in mind is the larger the band, the more vendor meals you'll need. We have an 11 piece band so I insisted we used a recommended band so their meals are free!
We looked at a bunch so feel free to FM me! Good Luck!!

FH doesn't really care one way or another, if they're not playing Wu-Tang or Talib Kweli (I have banned both from my wedding), he said it all sounds the same to him. LOL
I really want a band, so I'm gonna go against what most of these girls are saying. I know sometimes they don't do it exactly how the original band sings or performs a song, but I feel for dancing and interaction, it's much better to have a band. The DJ will interact with the crowd, but he's still just pressing play on his iTunes and that's it. They're not BAD, but it just gives the wedding a different feel.
I also use the rule 'he's asking for so little and is conceding to me for most things, if he wants something, I'll pretty much have no reason to say no'. He is literally not arguing with me about a single thing that I've asked for or wanted so far. I know that band vs DJ is a huge part of the wedding.
Maybe tell him to research a few bands, and you'll go to their showcases. You do the same with a few DJs. Then both of you can sit down and discuss the pros and cons of which you liked better. You may agree with each other more easily than you think!

How about a DJ with band pieces. My cousin had a DJ with a singer, percussionist, keyboarder, and (i think) sax. Not sure who they went with, it was a few years ago but its something maybe to look into.

If we could afford a band we would get one. Personally my FH doesn't ask for much when it comes to the wedding so if that was what he wanted I'd get it for him. If your FH really wants one I'd give in. Plus you're not paying for it so that doesn't hurt either.

Try talking to FH in numbers! Maybe he'll realize you guys can get a lot more for your money if you look into DJ's instead.

I personally want a band but that money could be used elsewhere. However, since you have someone paying it for you, and your FH really wants it- I'd let him have his one thing at the wedding! :)

I can't live without a band at my wedding... Both FH and I are musicians and we LOVE music and all kinds of it. Truth is, aside from a band being really interactive I also love that it is entertaining. For those people who can't or won't dance it gives them something/someone to watch!
