Re: Bands Vs. DJ's
I chose a DJ for the following reasons:
1- $$$$ Bands are like 4 times the price of a dj plus more people to feed.
2 - Original music by the original artists
and 3 - I've never seen a band motivate a crowd as much as a great dj.
JMO but I hope this helps

Re: Bands Vs. DJ's
The company where I got my band has packages with both a band and a DJ. My brother did this at his wedding and it worked out great! When the band took breaks, the DJ would play.
IMO, I like the idea of live music. I went to 2 weddings last week and one had a band, the other a dj. The dj's cd's skipped and the sound wasn't as good. However, there are A LOT of horrible bands out there and you just need to make sure you go to tons of showcases so you can see the differences in them! Feel free to FM me if you want any more info!

for us,,,we did not even need to think about it. FH is a BIG MUSIC JUNKY and we both agree, that songs are just better by the original artist.

Fh is Greek, my family is from Uruguay so we figured that it would be easier to get a DJ then 2 bands.

I chose a DJ; I haven't been to any weddings with bands but I think that if you have a good quality DJ he/she can play to all different tastes and really motivate a crowd plus they play the originally recorded songs, and as stated before they are MUCH cheaper!

I think if you are playing any type of ethnic music for any major part of the dinner, then go band.
If it is just American stuff - go dj!

i prefer live music over a dj. i think a band can motivate a crowd, but the key is to find the right band, which can be overwhelming.

Re: Bands Vs. DJ's
We are getting a band and DJ. I'm from Texas and FH is from NY. Im spanish and he is jewish. So I want to play music that the band cannot play. Country music (yes, I love it) and some spanish. We are really looking for a mix of little bit of everything. So I think we would be able to accomplish that with both a band and DJ. Plus, my FH wants live music. He is the more musical one in this relationship.

Re: Bands Vs. DJ's
I have had the opposite experience.
I have never seen a DJ motivate a group like good live music.
there is nothing wrong with either option, though. As long as you get a good DJ, or a good band, you will be all set. A great DJ is better than a crappy band, and vice versa!

Re: Bands Vs. DJ's
I think this is based on personal preference however I will tell you why I chose a DJ over a band.
I would rather have the songs played by the orignal artist rather than a band. I have seen bands that sound so incredible you wouldn't know but they were so much $$.
I also wanted a DJ for piece of mind. I didn't want to worry about if the singers were sick and wouldn't sound their best.
I have been to weddings with a band and IMO the DJ gets more of a reaction out of the crowd.
I guess it depends on what type of party you want to have.
Hope this was helpful.

Re: Bands Vs. DJ's
OK I am about to be stoned for what I have to say.
I was happy with either a dj OR a band - we chose a band b/c my family and my FH really wanted one.
I personally LOVE my band so I'm very happy.
My FH was VERY OPINIONATED when it came to this decision. He has been to many weddings and in a number of wedding parties. To him it was more a question of formality of the wedding - we wanted a more formal wedding - he felt that a dj was great for a less formal wedding - but a dj was a little classier (remember this is HIS opinion) and he felt that most of the weddings he went to with dj's felt more like a wild party/prom/bar mitzvah than a formal wedding - where those with bands got the crowds up and dancing but it was more formal. JFHO.

Re: Bands Vs. DJ's
Rob-luvs-me, I am also using Times Square and I cant wait! They are awesome! To brides who havent decided yet, I recommend a band (this one specifically), but that is just my opinion. I agree that sometimes a DJ can make the wedding feel like you are at a club or a sweet 16, but Im sure that if you find the right DJ, than it doesnt sound like that. I am not putting down DJ's, its just that I would rather have a band. Good luck to all those who are deciding!

Re: Bands Vs. DJ's
We chose a band because we love live music AND my dad is a semi-retired club date musician and it would be a sin to have a DJ in my family. My dad provided for our family on the salary he made playing in wedding bands. In my opinion, a band can get and KEEP a crowd going better than a DJ because they can get a feel for the crowd and switch songs in the middle of one OR they could extend a song, if the crowd likes it a lot. I think there is so much more that can be done with live music. And I personally think it is more formal and classier. If I wanted a DJ, I would have a wedding at a nightclub, not in a ballroom.

Re: Bands Vs. DJ's
Thanks for all the replies. I think I am going to go with a band. What bands is everyone using? Are their any at a fairly reasonable price? I have checked out one band so far and he gave me a quote of $3600.00.

springwedding,
i am using body heat. they are an 8 piece band with 2 female leads and 3 male leads. they are amazing, but they are also pricey. i am paying $6500 for them on a sunday. my advice to you is to check out as many showcases as you can. good luck with your search!

Re: Bands Vs. DJ's
I just prefer live music. My family had one request and it was a fabulous music. So my FI and I just fell in love with our band. I think it is about $6600 for a Sunday. Check out Faze 4 bands, but it is all about preference. You should go and see some showcases.

Check out Times Square Orchestra - they are AMAZING and very reasonable. They quoted us in Dec. 5500. They showcase - - but everytime I recommend them to someone they are always booked for their date!

Re: Bands Vs. DJ's
Christine, your wedding is before mine and I want a full review of them! I am so excited to have them at my wedding they really are amazing. Better than all the other bands I saw at showcases. We made a good choice.
