I want to take DH to Hawaii for his 30th in 2 years. I'd like it to be truly 'from me' as much as possible, with my own money that I set aside. I have a ton of books and other items I plan to sell on Ebay/Half.com and I wanted to open up my own bank account specifically for the funds for this trip.
My question is: Does anyone know of a bank that has a really low balance requirement for a savings account? I can't open the account with more than a few hundred but I refuse to pay maintenance fees and most banks seem to have balance requirements that need to be met or you get charged the fees.

Re: Bank Question
Some banks have vacation clubs/accounts. It's like a Christmas club where you deposit $$ in a separate account every week and use it for Christmas shopping. I don't think there is a minimum and I don't know if it accruse interest but that may be something to ask bank reps about.

Re: Bank Question
Washington Mutual has free checking with no minimum & statement savings with no fees if your average balance is over $500, if it's under it's $5 per month.

Re: Bank Question
For something like this, I recommend ING Direct. There is no balance minimum and currently they give you 2%. The downside to it is that is internet-banking and so it takes a day or two to get money if you need it, but it doesn't sound like you need something very liquid. I've been keeping all of my wedding money there since it isn't very easy for me to get my grubby little hands on. www.ingdirect.com
if you can get into a credit union - this is your best bet...
any family members teachers?

Re: Bank Question
Credit Unions rule. I still have an account with in TN. with TVA credit Union and I also have one here at Actors Federal. Are you still a member at the CU in TX.? You could set something up there if you're still a member.

Re: Bank Question
Thanks all. We belong to Island Federal but I wanted something totally separate. He's probably find out about a second account I opened there.
I think I'll look into ING Direct. It sounds like just what I'm looking for.

Nassau Ed. Fed. Credit Union is great! Can you get in? If not, I'd try to get into another credit union. They are the best!

Re: Bank Question
I was in my back SFCU in Lindenhurst and there was a sign saying that if you were a resident of Suffolk or worked in suffolk you could become a member....I didnt pay much attention to it but it might be worth looking into!

Re: Bank Question
I agree with the Nassau Ed thing. You just have to know a member in order to get a referral to join. Which...from this site..you do! lol. They are perfect for holiday clubs/vacation clubs..etc...

Re: Bank Question
I honestly love Commerce bank.. They are so nice there and it is very convient b/c they are opened late everynight and opened on the weekends. We opened a 'wedding account' with them it is a money market account and it earns more interest than a regular account the one catch is you need to keep $1000 in it at all times. We are actually trying to put it in instead of taking it out right now.

I have an account with ING Direct and it works well for me. If you have any questions about it you can FM. Also, as an existing customer, if I refer you, you can get $25 for opening an account. I sent you FM on about this if you are interest.
