Is it true that the church will not allow a person who married outside of the catholic religion to be a godparent?

I do not think that is true. I have never heard of it.

I don't think that is true. I was recently made a Godmother and although I was married in a church, they never asked me any questions about it.

That is not true. At least one godparent has to be Catholic.

Re: Baptizing and Godparents
I am pretty sure that someone who isn't catholic can't be a godparent, but I had never heard that if you married someone who isn't catholic that would bar you from being a godparent. That didn't sound right. Thanks!

Re: Baptizing and Godparents
It depends on the Church. For us, we needed 1 catholic confirmed adult and the other god parent must be a christen, but does not have to be catholic.
My friend's, however, had to prove that both of their chosen godparents are confirmed catholics.
Marriage has NOTHING to do with any of the requirements.

That is definately not true. THey prefer that they be Catholic but that is the only question I was asked. My husband is godfather to our neice and we are married civilly (at least until March ).

Re: Baptizing and Godparents
I guess I didn't pose my question right... Can someone jewish be a godparent? Can someone who is catholic but married someone who is jewish - can the catholic person still be a godparent?
Thanks! Sorry for any confusion!

Re: Baptizing and Godparents
Actually, my Jewish co-worker is a god parent. The god father is Catholic though. The mother spoke to her preist about it and he was ok with it.

Re: Baptizing and Godparents
You really need to speak to your Parish but from what I understand MOST Catholic parishes will not allow a Jewish god parent. You ONLY need one godparent though so the other can be a non-official one I guess. I mean, you only need one name of the certificate.
I am not sure how a Jewish person can be a godparent though when the whole point is to help raise the child in their Faith..will the Jewish person learn your faith and support it?

Re: Baptizing and Godparents
well, I can tell you that if you live in the rockville ctr parish that you can have one catholic godparent and one non- catholic godparent. (doesnt matter who is married to the person!),,,
thats the way we have it...but then again, we are an interfaith couple who observe and repsect each other's heritage ...and we are bringing up our daughter under both religions....Judiasm and Catholism.
FM me if you have any ?S that I may be able to assist u with....
