my mom just rented an apartment in the city and she has a shih tzu that apparently barks a lot during the day. she came home to a post-it on her door one day saying 'please stop your dog from barking' and just got a letter from the building management company saying they have been gettting complaints and she needs to do something to stop the barking. does anyone know of any humane bark collars (i know they aren't humane) or ones that are sort of nice??

that's what i said!!!! write a note back saying FU this is a pet friendly building and dogs bark .. if ppl have a problem with barking they shouldn't live in a building that allows dogs...

Re: bark collars?
sounds like the dog had separation anxiety...mine had severe separation anxiety and needed to take a mild behavior relaxer everyday (basically just made her mellow out a little and nap on and off) we also kept the tv on so she didnt feel alone and bought her a kong (which is a dog toy you fill up with treats) and that kept her busy for hours
hth!

keeping the tv on, or radio on and making sure she has something like the kong filled with peanut butter to keep her busy... taking her to a behaviorist is also a good idea..
i would definitely try other methods before the bark collar.

Try everything you can before using a bark collar. We were basically in teh same situation and forced to use one for be evicted and it onlylasted a week and i feel like our dog because much more aggressive. It could be a coinsidence but I would definatly try toys, treats and tv first.

Re: bark collars?
We had to put Disturbed and other hard Rock on for my dog when we left to keep him calm. My friend keeps animal planet on all day and that works for her woofie.

Re: bark collars?
My friend has a bark collar that sprays a citrinella-type scent anytime her dog barks. It just releases a surprising odor (nothing unpleasant smelling--it just surprises the dog!). It worked out really well for her.

Can you find out the name of this? or the brand?
My dog doesn't bark often, but when she does boy is she telling someone off. She does not like landscaping trucks and we have landscapers who come weekly. She does not like the replacement mailman (now that she has met our mailman, he's ok). She's 80 lbs and when she starts barking, I try to drag her from the window, often unsuccessfully.
My friends have a dog that just barked SO much. They tried every suggestion before finding this collar, and it's the only thing that worked.

Not sure if I posted the right brand, but you can get the idea from that! Also...I have a 35 pound Australian Cattle dog--it doesn't matter how big the dog is because his bark is still MIGHTY! :)

Re: bark collars?
thanks ladies :) she's tried all the sounds -- tv, music, everything! i'll send her the link to the spray collar and see what she says ... i did hear of someone whose dog started to like the taste of the spray and would bark just so she could lick her face!!!!!
