ok, so our 3 yr old pomeranian, molly, isnt socialized much and she is protective of us and our family. so whenevr she hears a strange noise she barks, and if she sees people from the window she barks.
we are moving into an apartment complex in NC in august and i am so worried she will get us kicked out bc of the barking! we got a unit in the back so we can walk her behind our apt and hopefully she wont see anyone to bark at. i am more worried about her barking at noises she heres from the apartments aroudn us.
what can we do to control the barking? my fi (will be my dh when we move there!) will be home with her during the day bc he will be working from home for a while, so he canbe there to try to keep her quiet. i need suggestions on what we can do!!! thanks, lacey

Re: barking issues
I adopted an older dog and he is VERY protective, and also suffers from separation anxiety. He barks all the time!! and he barks loud. He is a small dog, so you know the bark that I am speaking about, it rips through your ears. All my neighbors were calling me to complain, he kept them (and me) up at night and he barked the whole time I was gone. I called North shore animal league (where I got him) and spoke with a trainer. There is only 1 type of humane anti-bark collar and this is it. IT IS HUMANE. It is called Gentle Spray Citronella Anti-bark collar. It is made by Premier and you prob. will only find it on-line. It is expensive, I paid $90, but it is worth it. Without this collar, I know I wouldn't be able to keep my dog - he barks ALL THE TIME. Anyway, a device hangs off the collar under the dogs chin and when he barks, it sprays a mist of citronella. Dogs DO NOT like the smell or taste of citronella and once they realize what the collar will do, they will not bark when the collar is on. This is also a great training tool. I barely use the collar on my dog anymore, he has learned not to bark at everything. The collar comes with a pamphlet that helps aid with training your dog not to bark. Most of the time I put the collar onmy dog, it is not even turned on, he doesn't bark when it is on. I hope this helps. It is a great tool and like I said it is humane to the animal and not cruel in anyway.
I don't have the website I purchased it on, it was 2 1/2 yrs ago, but their # 888 640 8840

Re: barking issues
Our dog trainer recommends the citronella collar as well....thankfully our dog doesn't bark at anything unless someone is home to protect HIM.... Good luck.

Re: barking issues
wow, ok, so we might invest in the collar! thank you so much for your advice! luckily, my fi will be working from home for a while and he will be there with her to see how she is. but i know she barks when we are there or not, so its a problem we NEED to nix before we get ourselves kicked out! thanks, lacey

Bitter Apple. It's something that you spray in the dog's mouth to make them stop doing what it is that's 'wrong'. You say no, spray and say no again. After a few times, they'll realize that if they bark they'll get a squirt. You can get it at Petco or Pet Smart.

Re: barking issues
so we tried the citrinella collar but no success :( the collar cost $55 from amazon (we are going to try and return it, but i doubt we can). it was totally worth a shot, but what happened was it did not go off everytime she barked, more like every 10 barks lol. i think its bc she is a pom and has lots of hair which prevented the microphone from picking up the sound waves. i suppose one with a remote would work for her. i think we are going to have to get her used to a mussle (sp?) for when we both leave the apartment. luckily my fh will be working from home for a while so she wont have to wear one all day. we are going to try a spray bottle with something icky in it, maybe vinigar, before we go the mussle route. its just so frustrating. thanks for the advice! ~Lacey
