Basement Damp issue or whatever it is....

We will be living in FH's basement and I know due to this summer, it is extremely damp down there. It is starting to feel and smell like a basement. How can we avoid this without having to open the windows? Some areas (the bedroom) is really cool but by the outside door it is extremely warm in that area. Is there anything we can do now besides having the place smell pretty with candles and stuff? Its the dampness that kills me.

maybe a dehumidifier (sp?) would work.

You need a dehumidifer. Make sure you get one that is the right size for your area. that will make a HUGE difference.
Also, there is this stuff called Damp Rid that is sold in Ace-type hardware stores for $5.00. you can buy ones that hang in your closets or a bucket-type shape one that you put on the floor. We used those in our storage units and put them into our attic too. that also really helps.

Do you have AC? That should take out the dampness and circulate new air in there.

We use two dehumidifiers and that helps a bit.

We purchased a dehumidifier for the basement and wow...what a difference!

I don't know how big your basement is, but ours is about 1800 sq. ft., so we had to purchase a decent size dehumidifier. We ended up getting the Santa Fe by Therma-Stor.

yes, a dehumidifier will do it!

our basement was damp (due to all the rain) & very very smelly (previous owners had four cats down there- ewww!). we leave the dehumidifier on 24 hours a day- we dump it 1-2 times per day.
cleared everything right up! thank goodness!

A de-humidifier is the best thing for a basement. They work great. Just remember, they use a lot of electric and generally end up costing, electric wise, about the same as an air conditioner. But it is so worth it.

Thanks all for the suggestions. Will it be okay if we get one dehumidifier for a 3 room basement? Or should we get one for each room? Eek I hope only one.

A dehumidifier will definately help. You can get one at Home Depot.

Call Home Depot (or anywhere) before you go. We tried to get one everywhere and they were all sold out. We ended up getting one on ebay for a great price.

I know the Lowes by me has dehumidifiers. FH and my Dad saw some this weekend. We will have to stop in and talk to someone that can give us suggestions. All three rooms are different sizes and shapes.

My room is in the basement of my mothers house and I finally bought a dehumidifer. The problem i have wit the dehumidifer is that it lets off ALOT of heat, so now its not damp when its running but it is very hot and stuffy. I would recomment puting in AC. It will take out the humitiy and keep you cool.
