I am buying a coop and the bathroom floor is rotting away near the tub. The inspector said he wasn't sure if the floor under the bathtub is rotting as well, they will only be able to tell when they rip up the tile and look at the tub.
I need to fix the floor, but I'd also like to replace the tub, it has some kind of plastic wall instead of tile over the tub, and the plastic has separated about a centimeter from the tub--so it looks nasty.
My questions...
How much can a bathroom run? I don't need fancy schmancy expensive stuff... but I don't want garbage either.
Does anyone know a reliable person who could do this work? I'm in Rocky Point/Miller Place/Coram area.
TIA!

Re: Bathroom renovations/repairs?
Danielle, I only upgraded my bathroom, and put the new ceramic tiles right over the tiles that were on the floor. If you're looking to get a new tub, and redo the floors, be prepared to look at some $$$$. Is that the only thing you're re-doing? Or, are you adding tiles to the walls etc. as well? My 'upgrade' was $2,000 & I only reglazed the tub. Can you negotiate w/ the seller if it's rotting? Since this is a problem, and an extra expense to you, he/she should help you out, or lower the price.

Re: Bathroom renovations/repairs?
it depends on what you do you can get a decent kohler villager tub for like 300 and a bowl for 100 from home depot or a plumbing supply company like davis and warsaw. the cheapest way to go would be buying you own products and just paying for an installer. if you but the whole install the products are usually inflated. if you need a good installer i give you a few names of people i work with that are reasonable

Re: Bathroom renovations/repairs?
we recently re-did the bathroom in the basement and it wasn't expensive at all. But it depends on what you want to do.
A rotting floor is going to cost you, or perhaps it should cost the seller.
A generic regular tub can be bought for under $100. Toilets, sinks - they're not expensive, but we were doing the work ourselves.
Sounds like you have a tub surround. Those run from $100-300 if you want to replace it. Depending on the condition of the sheetrock underneath, that may have to go too.
If you want to replace the tub surround with tile, it will be more $$ (but will look nicer).

Re: Bathroom renovations/repairs?
We just redid a bathroom, this included an expansion into an adjacent room, new fixtures (everything and an additional jacuzzi tub), subfloors (which you might have to do), new tile throughout and a glass block shower... it cost about $40,000.
Either try to get the seller to knock off $$$ for the repairs or look elsewhere.

Re: Bathroom renovations/repairs?
40000 WHOA that's a LOT of money...
The seller has already brought the price down a bit, she won't go down anymore.
I just want to fix what needs to be fixed, I guess redoing the whole thing is a little ambitous at this point in time...
But I am definitely going to buy the stuff I need from Home Depot and have someone install it!!!
Jessnjoey and Anne01, I will FM you when I get closer to closing!
Right now I am looking at a closing date of Sept 15ish... have to wait for the bank and SONYMA!!
