Be careful!

Be careful!

My baby Gizmo was just in a vet. hospital for 5 days, and had surgery to remove a 'mass' from his stomach.

That 'mass' turned out to be 7 years worth of pieces of KONG TOYS!!!!! The vet gave us the mass (ew, i know.) - and even picked it apart to show us all the different colored bits of rubber. There was the blue one (his first kong ever), then the yellow one with the bumps, etc.

Needless to say, Kongs are NOT indestructible! Gizmo had never choked or coughed up any part of a toy ever before, but as it turns out, he was breaking off tiny pieces and swallowing them.

The mass was the size of my fist!!!

Please monitor your Kong-chewing dogs CONSTANTLY!!! They can cause a HUGE problem in the pup's digestive system.... not to mention a $3000 vet bill. If you see a piece become separated, THROW THE ENTIRE TOY OUT!!!

I don't want anyone else's pup to suffer the way mine did this week.

Shorty,

I am glad that Gizmo is feeling better. Would you want to post this up on the petfinders.com message board too??

wow, that is scary. I have a few Kong toys b/c it is the only thing that keeps Loki busy. I will definitely watch to make sure there are no missing parts.

I am glad Gizmo is feeling better

I'm not a member on there, but PLEASE feel free to share my story!!! You can cut and paste everything if you'd like.

The vet always told us that the Kong toys were the only 'safe' toys---- apparently NOT!

oh my god - that is insane!! I can't believe that, I'm really glad to hear that you pup is okay now though! If I were you, I would send a letter to Kong and let them know what happened... 7 years worth of toys!!!! I myself would just be curious to know how they would respond, seeing how they advertize their products as 'indestructible'. Golem hasn't really been playing with his Kong toys that much lately - he's been gnawing on Nylabones again - but I'll definitly keep this in mind the next time we let him have one of the Kongs! Again, glad to hear that Gizmo is okay now! What a traumatic experience!!

Re: Be careful!

thanks everyone, but please do be careful.

I'm not 100% Gizmo is better yet. He's definitely not himself, but then again, he had surgery 4 days ago. The mass in his stomach was the size of my fist - it was so horrible.

He was hooked up to IV fluids for 6 days, and now that he's home with me, he seems to be having bladder troubles. His urinalysis came back clear for a bladder infection, but when I take him out, he squats like he has to go, and stands there for 30 seconds or so, but doesn't always go! He shifts his weight, and tries again - he's getting so frustrated! It must be so uncomfortable.

And NOW, after 7 years of zero accidents, he has peed on our tile floor 10 times since we took him home yesterday. We take him out ALL the time, and like I said, he pees 2 drops. He has to go EVERY 15 minutes now!!! It's so bad... I'm hoping that it's just from the antibiotic or IV or surgery, and that he's not incontinent forever.

This has been a very difficult 2 weeks with this pup - I just want my old Mo back
