Bedding Terms Need Help Please

I'm trying to register for bedding stuff....can someone explain what the following are? (i'm clueless)

Standard Sham
European Sham
Coverlet

and is a duvet the same thing is a comforter?

I have no idea. I know what a sham is. But I never heard of a Standard Sham and a European Sham. Sorry!

I always thought a duvet is the same thing as a comforter.

i used to work in the bedding dept of linens n things!! lets see how much i remember!

a duvet is not a comforter.. it is the cover for a down comforter.. down comforters pretty much come in one style, white and fluffy.. so the duvet goes over it like a pillowcase and it comes in all different styles and colors like comforters do...

A sham is a decorative cover for a pillow, you dont sleep on it like you would a pillow case...

im pretty sure a standard sham goes on a standard size pillow and a european sham is just the same thing but a bigger size...

a standard sham is the type that can fit a basic pillow, ie for queen size bed. if you have a king sized bed then get a king sham.

a euro sham is for a square pillow.

a duvet is different than a comforter b/c a duvet is filled with down (feathers). luuuuuv the duvets (i have two different weights - one heavy, one light). if it is not filled with down then it is a comforter and not a duvet. usually you get a duvet cover for a duvet.

not sure about the coverlet, but i think it might be a small comforter.

A regular pillow fits in a standard sham. A square, larger pillow fits in a european sham. A duvet is kind of like a really big pillow case that fits over a down comforter.

And a coverlet...I'm not 100% on but I think it is some type of blanket.

Coverlets are basically a bedspread with the same 'drop' (15') as a comforter. Like bedspreads, they are not reversible and a have a lighter fill per square yard of polyester fill than comforters.
