Before you went for your glucose test.......

....did you try not to have anything sweet or have too much sugar the day before or did it even matter?

To be honest, it technically shouldn't matter as long as you fast for the recommended time, which is typically midnight the night before. The only thing that you should have is water...but last I knew, you weren't sure if you were to fast or not.

I can FM you specifics of the test if you want.

I was told to fast -- nothing to eat or drink after 12 midnight the night before, not even water. I wasn't even allowed to have water while I was taking it after I got nauseous!

When are you going? Ask your dr or if you're going to a lab, ask them. I know a few other people were allowed to eat, but I never was.

I was told by my dr NOT to fast. I also checked the paperwork they gave me to hand in at the lab and it specifies 'no fasting prior to test.'
I'm surprised that everyone else had to fast and they are telling me not to. I hope they don't make me flunk and have to take the 3 hour test because of it.

I have to go this week. I was thinking either tomorrow or Wednesday.
Thursday is DH's birthday and we are celebrating Wednesday due to his parents' work schedule. I am making dinner and cake so I would rather take the test before then.

They may do a random glucose tolerance test to see if you fall on the high end and then take it from there (perhaps having you do either the 1 hour or skip right to the 3 hour fasting.)

It is possible they haven't termed you as a risk for gestational diabetes.

Oh, so everyone who fasted took the 3 hour test? I am taking the 1 hour test. If I fail, I have to take the other one I think.

No, usually you fast for the one hour test....

I was thinking they wouldn't make you drink sugar drink and would just do a random draw. Hmmm, interesting!

I just got my instructions for the glucose test I have to take in a few weeks. I DO NOT have to fast. Actually, my appointment that night is at 5:45, so I was told to drink my drink in 10 minutes or less (they gave me a 50-mL orange drink) and be finished by 5:00, so the 1-hour has passed by the time I got there. I specifically questioned the doc about eating before and the possibility of me having a late lunch that day, and he said that was fine, that as long as I didn't eat a bowl of sugar or a huge candy bar before, I'd be fine.

I wonder why I don't need to fast?

I called the lab today and I verified that my dr said I didn't have to fast for the one hour glucose test and she agreed. She said she would give me a carbonated drink for the test. I wonder why I am the only one who was told NOT to fast. Very strange.

Sue.. DH ( physician) says that you must be going for a ' random plasma glucose' or ' spot sugar' test which you wouldnt have to fast for.
He says most obgyns dont usually give that test like that anymore becuase it really doesnt tell you anything.
He says its just like a screening test to see how low or high your numbers are.. then they would determine whether or not you move on to take the other tests..

Just Jodi: I'll know in the next couple of days because I am going either tomorrow or Wednesday. Thursday I would be afraid I would flunk because I am eating chocalate cake and making baked ziti for dinner.

Ok, I was apparently taught the 'new' way and that is why I couldn't find reference to it in my endocrine notes/books. I thought that was for screening purposes!

I also did the one hour test, not once, but twice, and I had to fast before each one. And I also had to fast before the 3 hour one.

They even asked me at the lab if I fasted. I don't know why it's different for everyone -- that's what cracks me up! Everyone is pregnant, right? Shouldn't it be the same for everybody?

It should be the same for everyone but who knows what they are basing it on. Maybe every dr does it differently. Who knows.
My DH's birthday is 1/15 but we are going to celebrate Wednesday because that was better for his family and their work schedule.
Happy Birthday to your DH. Do you have anything special planned? I am making dinner and cake. Other than that, he said he didn't want anything.

Happy B'day to your DH also. I was going to take him out to eat over the weekend, but the restaurant he loves was closed yesterday, so after practically begging him all day where he wanted to go, guess what he tells me???

ORDER CHINESE FOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!! He's crazy.

I just ordered his b'day gift from Gianna -- nothing like last minute -- the stupid Rolling Stone DVD. Now I have to order a cake for tomorrow. I think he's having a mid-life crisis because he doesn't want to celebrate!!

I did the one hour test and I didn't have to fast. My dr. actually gave me the drink to drink before I got to the office...wasn't too bad. I'm not sure why I didn't have to fast...
