Being pregnant and going to work

Being pregnant and going to work

I am thinking about all the pregnant women who are feeling notious, tired and generally not feeling 100%, and still having to come to work every day! Sometimes I wonder: How will I handle it when the time comes?

How did you combine you pregnancy issues with work? Did you have problems with your boos? did you ever feel so awful you had to stay home and miss an important meeting?

Re: Being pregnant and going to work

I've been really lucky when it came to dealing with my bosses, they are both very understanding of my pregnancy (I guess it kind of helped that I am 2 weeks further along then one of their wives). Saltines were always kept stocked in my drawer to help me through the day but I did leave one day because I wasn't feeling well.
I think the hardest thing has been trying to schedule doctor appointments...especially when they run long or are in the middle of the day. But I'm working through it the best I can and naps have become almost routine when I get home at the end of the day.

I'm sure you will figure it all out when the time comes. Best of luck to you.

My grandmother used to tell me that when she was in her 20's and got pregnant you could only work until you were 5 months along- at the most. The minute you started to show the boss made you quit your job. She said she always thought that was unfair.
Well, I know we need the money so I am thankful that I don't have to quit, BUT those were the days!!!
I now work from home full-time because of a compressed nerve problem but if my boss was a jerk I would have been really $crewed. I am lucky that he cares that I am in pain often and he wants me to lessen the stress by not commuting in the NYC.
It isn't easy to feel sick and work, or be uncomfortable and work. But millions of women manage everyday.

I think about this too, how will I make it through the day of teaching high school students. Thank Goodness my room is next to the faculty bathroom.

some days are MUCH better than others!

Out of all the physical discomforts there are, I find the emotional side much more difficult. It's tough to govern employees and deal with clients when you are agitated or feeling 'fat', or on the brink of tears for no reason. My poor co-workers!

I have not had any real problems at work, nor have I missed any days because of anything pregnancy related, but that was a concern of mine. I guess you just do what you have to at the moment to get through the rough patch.

Re: Being pregnant and going to work

I have to admit I didn't even tell anyone at work/school I was pregnant until this week. I think I was worried that they might treat and evaluate me differently - like every time I sat down, I was afraid they would think I was just taking advantage because I was pregnant. All of that was really my own psychosis, especially since I was doing a gynecology rotation last month! But there were some mornings in the OR when I came so close to having to step away from a surgery because I thought I was going to barf- I would be sweating and shaky but I just forced myself to get through it. And there were late late nights when I was there from 6am to 11pm when I almost broke down and cried but I just hung in there. But basically I had an easy time physically in the beginning so I was lucky. Everyone is different and has to deal with their situation in a different way- looking back, I probably would have given my colleagues more credit and shared the news sooner, but what's done is done now.
