I dont know if it really matters as far as perks... you can do it on your own but I personally feel more comfortable and can ask them questions
FYI: TA's dont make any commision on tickets anymore
FH's mom is a TA so of course she will be booking ours hehe

Yes there are lots of benefits for booking with a TA. First of all if there is any type of problem they will handle everything for you. Like if there are last minutes changes, cancellations, weather issues etc. Secondly they are knowledgeable. They usually take fam trips - free trips to hotels/resorts so they get familiar and can sell them. So they can sell you what you want because they've been there.
USually travel agents get paid commission from what they sell - packages, airfares etc... but the business commissions are dwindling so some travel agents charge a flat travel agent service fee on top of your packages.
I am not a travel agent but work for a travel wholesaler and I will tell you that I am definetely going to a travel agent for my honeymoon. I have seen how hard travel agents work for their customers. You have enough planning to do you might as well let someone else worry about all the little details with your honeymoon!

Re: Benefits of
this is my first time using a TA and i am so glad that i did
so far she already lowered my price once and if the price goes down again she will book the lower rate and then cancel my current rate ( could i possibly do this too. . yes. . .would i? no way LOL)
she is also gathering all the possible flights for me then i have to pick. so far she has told me so many things that i had no idea about
perks: since i am going to sandals and booking with a sandals TA i am first considered if there is an upgrade available
if you have a problem while you are there - you call the TA and she takes care of it not you!
they usually throw something in (an extra or maybe just a bottle of champagne) as a suprise!
and she is also helping me figure out the best insurance to cover my trip

True FMIL does all those things. many times she will give on board credits (for cruises) if it is a honeymoon they will somtimes send a bottle of champaine (like tilde said) or fruit. Clients call them all the time if there is a problem with their room or etc..
The trips are the best.. thats why FH and I have been so many places she gets a travel agent rate and we get free nights!!!

The security of having someone who is knowledge about the place you are going to and they will know about any changes. For instance, I read in a magazine that this couple was going to somewhere in Greece and their flights had changed three different times and their agent was able to plan the hotels and transportation around all of the changes.
