A friend of mine was married last November, and there was a huge uproar in the family because the best man was flying into NY from Nevada the morning of the wedding. The big upset was the possibility of him being late and 'unable to tip the Maitre 'D.' I was confused by this, but they said it was tradition.
Do you think they were saying that the best man actually provides the tip or just that the best man delivers the tip envelope, prepared by the bride/groom or the parents' or whoever is footing the bill for the wedding expenses?
Thanks girls!

Re: Best Man & Tipping ?
The bestman usually delivers the tip. The envelopes are prepared my the bride and groom. I had a DOC who took care of the tipping for me. I gave her the envelopes. But my best man handed out a few of the envelopes.

Our Best Man is giving out all the tips and day of payments. Thank God!! That takes alot of pressure off.

Traditionally, the best man delivers all the tips - but I didn't trust our BM to be sober enough to handle that so I had my dad do it.

I hadn't heard of this either. My dad handed out all of the final balances and tips.

Re: Best Man & Tipping ?
my question is... if he was late to tip the MD, then wouldnt he have MISSED THE CEREMONY which is more important?

don't ask me - i think it was just stress about his late arrival in general. you're right, it doesn't make sense, but i think it was just a lot of ranting and raving to try to get him to fly in the night before (which he absolutely couldn't do because of work).

Re: Best Man & Tipping ?
lol this is the first i have ever heard of this. at our wedding, the tips were held by my sister/MOH -- at the end of the nite DH and i, together, handed them out.
not that our family is shady--but we didn't want anyone else giving out the tips but us....it give us a moment to actually verbalize the 'TY' to each vendor as well as give them their $$

That's interesting. I hadn't heard that either. The closest I've heard is that the best man steps in to cover any shortage in bar tab, tips, or whatever in an emergency shortfall and is then promptly reimbursed by whomever was originally supposed to pay. Although I think that's a pretty stringent duty and I wouldn't expect the BM to do it--I've only heard it from one source. DH and I ended up handing out the envelopes ourselves.
