So, last night, we were going to bed, and my husband turned over, and his eyes got really big and he said 'holy sh!t! is that a fire?' so we jumped up and ran to the window, and there was, in fact, a fire! Huge flames were shooting out of the roof of the co-op diagonally across from us. So we called 911, they were already here though and then we ran outside to see what the heck was going on. It must have been an electrical fire or something, because the people who live there said they were twatching tv, and all of a sudden they lost all power and then smelled smoke....so they ran out (in their pajamaswith no shoes or underwear.... ) and warned everyone to evacuate that block of apartments....luckily no one was hurt and the fire didn't spread....and all of the pets were saved as well. One woman had to be taken to the hospital because she inhaled too much smoke when she went back in to get her cat....but that was the extent of the inujuries... it was so scary though.....they have no home now while they have to rebuild it....lots of water damage, for them and the people who live right under them..... what a strange night! I have to say, the Glen Cove and surrounding fire departments are AMAZING!!! they were quick to respond, they worked so hard, sent so many people, and were so nice to this poor old couple and made sure that everyone had a place to go, and people to take care of them ...i was very impressed.
oh, and i was wearing my LIW t-shirt for the whole thing

well, the monthly meeting is on wednesday, so i have a feeling a lot of people will go and perhaps we can set something up to help those that were affected by the fire. sadly, becasue the apartments are connected, the water and smoke damage caused a lot of the people to be evacuated last night....and who knows for how long.... we're planning on going to the meeting, and if no one else mentions it, i'll make tom stand up and motion to get a fundraiser going.

Re: Big fire at my co-op last night
Thank god everything is ok! My neighbor's house EXPLODED about two and a half years ago. Talk about traumatizing and terrifying. His roof landed on our lawn practically. He died, but apparently, he was making pipe bombs in his basement and the police had been tracking him for months, so he was crazy

Re: Big fire at my co-op last night
rachel - that's insane!!!! nothing like that here....
the meeting was tonight, and i have to say, i'm going to have to drink heavily before the next one.... i love it when you're sitting in a room in uncomfortable chairs with people you've never met before, but live in a community with, and they keep asking the same question over and over again, without listening to the reasonable response people are giving them!
the fire was talked about and everyone has been taken care of and has a place to stay and they're working on the repairs, which should hopefully be done soon.
so all is well for us
thanks for asking!!
