bilingual seating?

bilingual seating?

I have an interesting question:
Fi's friends prefer to speak Russian, mine are mostly americans (i.e. speak English). We were planning to seat them separately (i.e. not mix languages), but I just realized then we'll have mostly male and mostly female tables, with all bms sitting at the female table and all groomsmen at male... This feels a bit weird to me, but I am scared of mixing them up... What should we do?

No offense to your FH's friends. But you say PREFER, does that mean they speak and understand English? If that is the case, feel free to mix them up! JMO And same goes for vice versa, if your friends understand Russian. I don't think you have a huge problem here Alina, don't worry about it.

LOL! With all the craze about saving seats and sitting in categories at the GTG, I thought your thread was going to be asking for a bilingual table tomorrow night.

To respond to your topic, if the Russian guests are capable of speaking English, I say mix it up, they can handle it for a night!

You should sit people according to how yo feel. My family speaks Italian but Im not seperating them. No offense but thats ridiculous

Russian guests are able to speak English, but may not necessarily be polite enough to do so... I am trying not to offend non-russian speakers!!!

I can't exactly tell FH's buddies which language to speak b/w themselves.

I have a feeling if I sit 10 people at a table, equally split, most likely it will be 2 separate conversations, and FH's friends won't be happy not being able to sit together... My friends don't all know each other (only as acquaintances) so they won't mind as much being split up.

Alina - I think you should do whatever you feel comefortable doing....I think that if FH's friends were in a setting where they had to speak English to communicate with other guests they would happily.
So whether or not you mix it up it will still be great!!!!

oops - didn't see your post before I sent this one....
If you think they wouldn't be polite enough to - then sit them however you think would make your guests feel the most comfortable and relaxed, b/c more than anything you want everyone to have a good time...

LOL Wacky, that was cute!

Alina, I would put all of your FH's friends together and all of yours together. No need to mix them up. I thought they were mutual. My friends will not be seated at the same table as FH, of course if we had a few left over we'd put them together. I think everything will work out fine!

Re: bilingual seating?

OctBride, that's what I was plannign to do, however, I just realized that they might be not just language segregated, but also 'sex' segregated, and I am not sure I like that idea (all girls table and all guys table, half of the friends are still single)

Re: bilingual seating?

Alina,

My FH's family is Russian and while they do speak English are not always 'polite' enough to do so. This used to really bother me, but I have learned to let it go. I have learned (from when they do speak English) that they have nothing very interesting to say anyway . Anyhow, I say if it is friends, not family, seat them anywhere you feel they should sit. You can't please everyone, just please yourself. Also, just because they are seated at the same table, that does not necessarily mean that they will spend all that much time with eachother other than when the food is served.

Hope I helped.
