Bills for electric heat?

Our potential new condo is entirely electric - any idea how much the average cost of a monthly bill is? I hear the heat can be pricey in this case.

Any other pros/cons with electric? I'll be sorry to leave my gas stove though.

Since, I am responsible for the electric bill in our home. I have signed up on what is called the equal payment plan. Do they offer that where you are??

I think it is awesome for the summer especially. You should look in to that. It can definitely be costly. The reason I got on this plan was after I started paying the bill I kept seein an increase in the amount each month I was like...no way Jose

I used to work for 'LILCO', not sure what they are calling themselves these days, but from what I remember the electric heat bills were extremly expensive. You can call there with the address (if that is who covers your electric) to get a monthly estimate. I am sure you would be able to call any elec co. to find that our (ConEd, etc). Check it out before you buy just so you know what you can expect.

My condo is also all electric - heat, A/C, stove, everything!!!

I can tell you from three year's of experience that the bills aren't pretty during the summer. Central A/C can drive my bill upwards to $300 a month in the summer. I'm on the average billing plan and right now I pay $101 a month thanks to the somewhat mild summer than we had, but with this winter so far, who knows. FI just moved in, so I'm curious to see if it spikes any. LIPA is very good at keeping track on your usage - I think 3 months in a row my payment went down b/c of the mild summer.

One tip - when it says to change the a/c and heating filter every 250 hours of use, change it!!! Once I got into the habit of changing the filter on a regular basis, I did notice that it became much more efficient and also drove my bill down.

I had an all electric apartment when I lived in Philly and it was really expensive to heat (due partially to the 10 foot ceilings - that's where the heat went ) I would look into what Shamma does with the payment plan so it's easier to budget the utilities.

I didn't even think about blackouts! How horrible that would be! At least my mom lives nearby! LOL

That's a good idea - I will call LIPA and see if they can give me a monthly estimate.

Shamma - good idea - I'll look into that as well if the condo works out!

Karen - that's kinda high! Do you have a large condo? Is it 1 bdrm?
