If you have a parakeet... do they need to come out of the cage and have human interaction or are they content to be caged birds? I have finches that are only caged, they cannot be hand tamed. Its the way the breed is but I am not sure about parakeets.

Re: Bird question
I don't know if they HAVE to, but we always took ours out and handled them. My sister's parakeet Elmer would actually let himself out of the cage (sneaky little guy!) and fly over and land on someone's shoulder and hang out. Either that or he'd land on your head and start making a nest He had no problems going on our finger when we put our hand near him. MY parakeet Charlie was a crotchety old meany - he was a biter! I think it just depends on the level of trust - I got Charlie when I was young and was afraid to put my hands near him. I'd pull my hand away a lot when he'd put his beak near it to balance. That's not good to do so I think that's why he started biting.
Anyway, I hope that rambling helped a little

Re: Bird question
The reason I ask is because I have Murphy, my Jack Russell. No bird is safe from him out of the cage. He has caught birds in the backyard and it is in his instinct to hunt. So I basically want to know if it is cruel to get a parakeet and keep it in a cage.

Re: Bird question
My brother had one that didn't like to come out of the cage and was perfectly content staying in there. He came out once and smacked into every wall until we caught him. Anyway...he lived for almost 13 years. That is a LONG time for a parakeet. I think it was because he wasn't exposed to germs or anything.

Re: Bird question
I don't know if they need to get out. I had two when I was a kid, and whenever they were out, they always made it a point to poop on my fathers head. So they stopped going out.

Charlie lived about that long too! The thing just wouldn't die! I loved that bird but his squawking could get on my nerves.
I don't think it's necessary for parakeets to ever come out of their cage. You could just get them a big cage with ladders and maybe a swing and they'll be fine.

Re: Bird question
It would be nice to take the bird out of the cage. Isn't that the reason why you would get one? I mean we take our lovebird out all the time and that's why he stays so friendly. He likes to come out and I think he's more of our pet when we take him out. JMO
