if i make my wedding black tie optional to imply dressier more so than not, is it improper to put my bridesmaids in short dresses?

I think most women would assume 'black tie' meant wearing a long length gown. They might find it odd that your girls are wearing short dresses. Perhaps 'black tie optional' would be a more appropriate term to put on the invite.

I believe it is improper, but I might be wrong. I was invited to a wedding that said black tie optional and I was very confused because it was a daytime wedding and the bridesmaids were in shorter dresses and the men were not in full tuxes.

Agree with the above. Black tie = Gown and Tux. How about sayingv 'Formal Attire Requested'

One of my favorite invite lines was 'Formal Attire not Required, but Dress to Impress'

I am having a black tie optional wedding. In my opinion the bridesmaids should be in long gowns and set the tone of the wedding. I would be very confused if I got to a 'black tie optional' wedding and wore a long dress and the bridesmais were wearing short- i think i would instantly feel like i was over-dressed and then be uncomfortable the rest of the night.
