Black Tie? Formal Attire?

Black Tie? Formal Attire?

Is anyone else worried about what their guests will wear to their wedding? This thought popped into my head today and I could not stop thinking about it! Do people still write black tie on the invitation? And is there etiquette for what you have to have in order to have a black tie affair?

This is bugging me.... are you worried too?

I'm not worried... I've never been to a wedding where people have not dressed appropriately. LOL, the only one I'd be worried about is my own dad and we're dressing him, so that's taken care of, cause God knows what he'd come up with left to his own devices.

but I'm not putting Black Tie because I don't expect people to show up in evening gowns and tuxes...suits and cocktail gowns are fine by me and that's how I'm used to people dressing.

Haha, I love dads for that! I was just talking the other day about how my dad loves name brands and will wear something just because its a name brand!

The reason I guess I am most worried is because we are having our wedding on a Thursday night and I don't want people to just come from work wearing something they wore all day!

We were debating putting 'black tie optional' on our invitation, but decided against it. We debated back and forth and decided that it might confuse people, and one person told me that he felt it was condescending, as if he needed advice on how to dress for a wedding.

Eh, if they're people familiar with NY weddings and they know what venue they're going to, I'm fairly confident they'll know to dress up more than what they wear for work, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Unless you actually do want a black tie affair, then by all means put it on the invitation, people do that.

I'd put 'Semi-Formal' or 'Cocktail Attire'.

I'm a little worried because FHs entire side is from way upstate, and all of the weddings of his friends that I've been to, some of the ladies wear capris and flip flops Some wear nice dresses too, so I'm just confused. We aren't putting anything on the invite, but just kind of spreading the word about attire. We aren't doing anything formal to begin with, but I'd rather not have someone show up in jeans, not that I would turn them away if they were someone we wanted there!

My sister had a very formal affair and had black tie suggested on her invites, and most of the men came either in tuxes or suits. Most of the ladies wore cocktail dresses, but not formal long gowns. I think if you put 'formal attire' or 'cocktail attire' you should be good to go!

We are thinking about Black Tie Optional, but we're not sure. Honestly, these days, most people always wear suits and nice cocktail dresses. I feel like the term Formal Attire is already assumed, and if you don't want formal attire, you should put 'Casual attire' or something.

Most people here dress that way for an evening wedding, but if you have a lot of guests from out of town, you may want to be on the safe side.

I personally love putting dress codes on invitations, because it makes dressing for the event much less stressful.

Not worried at all. Never been to a wedding where I thought anyone was inappropriately dressed or not dressed up enough.

If you are having a strict black tie affair, than I would write black tie on the invites

if your still unsure, go with black tie optional onthe invite. its perfectly acceptable to do so
