My wedding is going to be during the day, but I want it to be just as formal as an evening affair and I'm under the impression that some people tend to think that a day time wedding is more casual. Do you think putting Black-Tie Optional on the invitation is OK or inappropriate??

I don't see it being a problem. It'll at least give them a hint to dress formally.

please do not take offense, this only my opinion. But since you asked Asking people to wear a black tie can often be misconstrued and be though of as pretentious. Even if you say 'optional', people will feel obligated to spend money on renting a tuxedo, or if they decide not to, they will feel inadequately dressed.
Again, just IMO.

Re: Black Tie Optional?
I was thinking of doing black tie optional...
I think if you said Only : Black tie it would make others feel under dressed if they didnt , they would feel obligated... but the optional part makes it known that it is a formal affair

Re: Black Tie Optional?
It is your wedding you can do as you wish. Time of day doesn't matter.I have been to 'twighlight' weddings that begin at 4pm on A Sunday afternoon where the invitation said 'black tie.'
I don't think asking a man to wear a tuxedo is any more presumptuous or pretentious than assuming a woman has a dress that would be appropriate for a formal function. A woman not only needs a dress, but she also needs a handbag, shoes, hosiery and sometimes specialty undergarments. Put those all together and it costs a heck of a lot more than the rental of a tuxedo. But women don't rent clothes. They OWN them. They have already shelled out the bucks. I've posted my opinion in this before, It is cheaper to buy a tuxedo and once you wear it twice, it has more than paid for itself. Though out of town guests shouldn't be expected to rent. JMO.

Re: Black Tie Optional?
It is your affair and completely up to you what type of formality you wish to convey. I was having the same dilemma (not so much that I wanted everyone is tuxedos, but definitely more towards the formal side~as you know, people's dress can vary greatly). Ultimately, we decided on very elegant invitations without Black tie optional/invited written on them but we are having an evening wedding. If I were in your shoes with a day wedding, I would prob. have put it on there though b/c people tend to interpret their dress from the time of day.

Re: Black Tie Optional?
I am having a 'Black Tie Optional' wedding on a Saturday night. I decided to do that because I just think it looks really nice when all of your guests are dressed up. I went to a Black Tie Optional affair during the day and i have to admit I felt kind of funny putting a gown on in the middle of the day. I know that a lot of other people at the affair felt the same way...its almost as if black tie just goes better with evening affairs. But like everyone else is saying you do what u want to do!

I put black tie optional on my invitation for 1 reason--not for the men but b/c I have been to weddings where women wear the most inappropriate dresses (when they bend down you can bascially see their a**--if you get my drift). It kinda tells women that they have to wear a long gown--if the men want to wear a tux that is their business but I am not expecting it one bit.

I agree about women even though being one, I know its horrible to say. It seems the men know that a wedding means 'suit' but some women seem to interpret the formality in much different ways and sometimes with alarming results!
