Black Tie Optional

Black Tie Optional

How many of your weddings were Black Tie Optional?

I'm getting mixed feelings about this from my family.... But I think the wedding should be BTO.

we did black tie preferred --means the same thing i think...some people on DH's side didn't get it though --women were wearing sundresses and the men didn't even wear suits...

I actually had this printed on my reception card (bottom line of card). I'm glad I did because as the response cards come in, people have called and said thank you for letting them know. Many were used to attending weddings in dressy, casual attire as opposed to formal wear. The men don't necessarily have to wear/rent a tux, but they know now that they must be in dark suits with ties and the women in formal dresses.

We are going to have BLACK Tie perferred. Those who want to wear tuxedo's will. Those who don't, will wear suits.(hoefully)

Suebride - That's what I'm worried about with FI's family too. I just want to put it on the invitation so people understand the formality of the event...

I wrote BTO on our invites also... Mostly because alot of FI's side is from FL, & weddings are typically more casual there. I don't want people to rent tuxes, but to know to wear a nice suit

Mooncusp - that's exaclty how I feel as well.

If FI and I were going to a BTO wedding, he would most likely just wear a dark suit. Do you think that people would go out and rent a tux for BTO? I don't want to inconvenience people - it just means get really dressed up.

yeah --i think you should definitely include it on the invite so your guests understand that it is a formal event --i don't think this forces men to rent a tux --it just lets people know that it is a formal wedding and they should dress appropriately...some people just don't care anyway and will dress however they want...

I think BTO is just a polite way of saying Black Tie.

Just say Black Tie if thats what you want!

My wedding is during the day - but it is still going to be a formal event...can I put 'Formal Attire' on the bottom of my invite? I don't want people in Tuxes (unless they are in the bridal party)...

I would but formal attire if you expect the men to be in suits and a tie and the ladies to be in dressy dresses and suits.

We did 'Black Tie Invited'

Re: Black Tie Optional

I always thought that Black Tie Optional meant that the couple wanted everyone to be dressed up nicely in dresses and suits, and if anyone feels like a tux thats ok too.

Black Tie Preferred means the women should be in more formal dresses and men should be in tuxes.

To me there's a difference between optional and preferred.
If you're just looking to have people dress nicely then optional is fine. If you want a formal affair, i'd definitely put preferred

That's not true at all, atleast I don't percieve it to be. BTO is just letting people know that khakkis and sundresses is not appropriate. Black tie means you should/must wear a tuxedo and formal gown.
I didn't do either, but I did write, 'formal reception to follow'
