Black Tie Optional?

Black Tie Optional?

I want our wedding to be a formal event. Our 'theme' is diamonds & pearls with an old school glamor vibe. Should I put black tie optional on our invites?

Edit: If people come in tuxes, fine, but I'm just really trying to get the formality of the event across. A sharp dark suit will suit the bill fine too! And for the ladies, glitz and glam preferred, full gown optional!

We're having black tie optional, so obviously I don't think it's lame and pretentious. FH wanted it to be black tie preferred but I don't want to insist people rent tux's just to come to our wedding. I think it states the level of formality that you want for your wedding, what is wrong with that?

I think as long as its optional, that's fine.

If I got an invitation that called for Black Tie NOT optional I'd be pissssed.

I think its a lot to ask of people, especially girls to spend additional money to attend your wedding. I would never get a gown to wear to a wedding

sorry but i can't stand black tie events ... mostly because it means that FH and I would need to spend money on a tux and dress (i don't have a formal dress i could wear) ...

i probably would not attend a black tie wedding

i didnt vote... im not a fan of black tie optional.... i'd either make it black tie or dont give them the option... if i got a black tie optional i would opt out of dressing that way... so if you want it fancy then say its a black tie affair... rather than giving people the option...

we're doing black tie optional too. we put it in a smaller font at the bottom of the reception card.

I don't think there is anything wrong with it. Weddings outside of New York are VERY different and often much more casual, so I don't think there is anything wrong with indicating that your wedding is a formal affair.

If you're afraid people you invite will show up casual, then I would definitely put it on there. It's optional and it just sets the tone for the event.

ITA! FH's family is from Michigan, Kentucky and North Carolina - I don't want people wearing khaki pants or jeans to my wedding. I'm DEFINITELY writing black tie optional bc I'm hoping they'll at least wear a shirt and tie.

No offense to those of you with family in those states, but like someone said, weddings outside of NY are just very different and I want people to recognize this is a formal event. We went to FH's cousins wedding in NC and people wore jeans. Not happening for my wedding - sorry.

Our wedding is black tie. Does this mean every single guest must rent a tux or wear a long dress, no. I've been to many black tie events where some guests have opted for black suits. However, black tie will ensure that most, if not all, guests will dress formally. Honestly, it's your wedding, so do what you want.

ITA! We are doing black tie but most black tie weddings i have been to woman wear dresses and mean wear suit and tie which is how I want people to come dressed to my wedding. I want to see girls with cocktail dresses or gowns.

We are doing black tie optional. I want a formal affair, but do not want to insist on people spending extra money to rent tuxes or buy long gowns. So black tie optional sets the tone that it's a formal affair, yet they have the option to wear a suit or rent a tux.

i think black tie optional is a great way to get your point across...obv everyone does have to but you are setting the tone for what attire you want at your wedding

IMO putting black tie optional is fine to get your point across.. it will set the tone for the affair with out insisting on tuxes and gowns

I would put it. I am doing it because I don't want anyone to wear white. People did at my sister's wedding and quite frankly I would be pissed.

Most weddings I attend are black tie optional or black tie. It is definitely not too much to ask!

Mine was black tie optional and I didnt have any complaints. I thought it was great because there were people who rented tuxes and some who didnt...but I didnt have any people who were dresses casually and that was what I was going for!
