FH and i have been having a huge debate as to adding this or not. One of his friends said if he received a BTO invite for a good friend he would go out and rent a tux...this is not what we want. we want the men to be dressed in suits but no need for tux rentals. Anyone have any ideas on how else to word it so that people dont go rent tuxedos? The ladies i have spoken to said they wouldnt mind seeing BTO on an invite and they would have no prob dressing for it.
if we do add it, i may be able to convince FH to put it on the reception hall direction card...is that strange though? He seems really against having it on the invite...help
EDIT - I like the idea of 'formal attire' - would you suggest writing just 'formal attire' or 'formal attire required' or 'formal attire requested'?

Re: black tie optional
we're putting black tie preferred on the reception card.
we really don't want people showing up in jeans and that's the only way we thought we could avoid it because we've been to weddings in FH's family where people have worn jeans

We put Black Tie Event because it is going to be really nice and we are spending a lot of money and we have a lot of out of towners who showed up to my Sister's wedding without ties and stuff so we wanted to address the formaltiy of the occasion

Do you really want black tie (optional), or do you just want people to know that they should dress nicely? What about putting 'formal attire' instead?
This exactly... you shouldnt put BTO if you dont want people showing up in tuxes...

I would have wrote Formal Attire if I had thought of this

thats not a bad idea...you are right we dont really want black tie optional (well I do but FH doesnt) but we do want people to be dressed nicely (have a lot of people from out of state that may not dress appropriately and considering the cost of the wedding we do want it to be a more formal event). im going to suggest 'formal attire' to FH
is it terrible to put it on the reception card though instead of the invite? not sure i can convince FH to do that...but im going to try

Is there any way to get to word out that suit and tie is preferred rather than tuxes...

Re: black tie optional
It depends on your invitation. It should not be on a directions card, b ecause that should only have directions. If you have an invitation that lists only the church or example, and then areception card with the reception time and location, it should go on the reception card. If it's one invitiation with both ceremony and reception on one card, then it goes on that. It goes on whatever card tells you when and where the reception is

Re: black tie optional
why can't you put it on the reception card? I don't know if that's improper etiquette but in my head that's where I would put it.
You also say Elegant Attire requested.

i would say the old fashioned way is to write it on the invitations... imo, if you do word of mouth the chances are greater that people wont find out or they wont believe it because its not on the invitation...
