is it improper to write 'black tie optional' on the invites?

Re: black tie optional?
I have seen this on many invites. I have also seen 'black tie preferred'. Not to fond of the latter.

Re: black tie optional?
we used 'optional' - I didn't want guests to feel like they HAD to be in a tux or that we preferred they were. I thought that was too much pressure. I think 'Optional' - gives them the option, but no pressure.

Optional is fine. I have seen it several times on invites. I personally don't like requested - cause it almost sounds forced. But, optional is fine!

We are doing optional. I don't want to demand it on anyone.

Re: black tie optional?
on this topic, if an invite says 'black tie optional' what is the appropriate attire for a friday night weddding? We have one in august and FH is arguing with me over what he is wearing
