'black tie preferred'

'black tie preferred'

got an invitation with this in title

DH will be in tux since he is a groomsman

should i wear a ballgown? or a cocktail dress?

i have been to fancy events before, so i do have 2 ballgowns. 1 is brown silk/satin. and the other is black satin with a flair (like standard bridesmaid dress material)

i think the black will be better, since DH's tux vest is silver...but idk......

can i get away w just a cocktail dress?

its at a fancy NYC hotel....

When I went to a wedding in a fancy Manhattan hotel as the date of a BP member, I wore a floor length gown. You could get away with a cocktail dress, but floor length would be better.

ETA: What are the BMs wearing?

I put 'black tie preferred' on our invites and people still showed up in khakis and button downs with no tie or jacket. So if you wear a cocktail dress you will be totally ok! If DH is wearing a tux though and in the bridal party I would wear a long dress and the black one. If it's a dark brown it might not match the black suit so the black will look cleaner and nicer.

You could probably wear a cocktail dress but I think the black one would be perfect.

BMs are wearing navy. but i dont remember the style/fabric.

when i go to my parents house, ill take and post a pic of the black dress

idk, the more i think of it the more i think it looks prom/bridesmaid-sy.....

and, to be honest, i really dont wanna spend a lot more money cuz this wedding is already costing us a lot of $$

Yeah, that's why I asked what the BMs are wearing. I always try to avoid wearing overly bridesmaid-y dresses to weddings, even if they are really nice! Ahh screw it, save your money and wear a cocktail dress!

I think floor length is better, but if its a dressy cocktail dress you should be OK.

We had 'black tie optional' and one for DH's uncles showed up in khakis and a polo. I guess he thought his other option was casual Friday.

You can def get away with a cocktail dress - as long as it's really fancy! Or a gown. Whatever you look hotter in! :)

i'd wear the black one. how many times do you get to dress up super fancy, anyway? save your $$ and wear that one. and i wouldnt worry about what the BMs are wearing.

Dressy cocktail dress is completely appropriate, though a floor length evening gown is better.

I assume you don't mean an ACTUAL ball gown, as that would be a bit dressy for black tie preferred.

If you use one of your evening gowns, stick with black. Brown is a less appropriate evening color.
