black tie question?

black tie question?

Ladies,

My FH and I got invited to a November wedding that's black tie... I have a pretty black sparkly halter dress, but it's a cocktail dress, not a gown... Is that sufficient, or do I need to get a full length dress? I would like to wear something that I already own and not have to spend $100 on a dress, oy! Or, if it has to be full length, does it NEED to be black? I have a very pretty silver dress that's full length....

thoughts? thank you! :)

have a great weekend!

How dark a silver is it? If it is a light silver that looks white then no, go with the sparkly black one, but if the dress is more on the dark side of silver I would wer that one. Or you could just ask the bride herself. I told my friends that even though my wedding was black tie, if they had nice looking bridesmade dresses they had to already wear from other weddings they could wear those to my wedding.

As far as I was aware, black tie mandates that men wear tuxedos. We ladies have a little more leeway in our attire. It doesn't mean that we have to wear a long black dress. I have been to many black tie affairs where I would wear a gown depending on the season (always full length though). I've worn pink, red, burgundy, etc. and IMHO, have always been dressed appropriately.

What material is your silver gown? If it is a mute silky satin silver, I think you are OK.

IMO, black tie means that the men should wear a dark suit or a tux. for the ladies, a black dress is always appropriate, even if it's cocktail length.

Im having a black tie wedding and yes, there is a lot more leeway for women. You can wear a cocktail dress (black or not) as long as it is tasteful and not too 'hoochie' looking.
