Black Tie Wedding

I just got invited to a wedding and the invite that states that it is Black Tie. Will my fh be required to wear a tux?

I think so. I'm pretty sure that's what it means.

Not true. I had a black tie wedding. Dark suits are fine. Nobody was kicked out. Some people simply put this on their invitations to indicate the formality of their affair. You would be surprised how many people show up to weddings dressed like they are going to a backyard BBQ.

Thanks! I am not sure how my fh is going to feel about getting a tux but we shall see it is his friends wedding so I am not going to worry!

If he is inclined to wear a dark suit, he may want to wear a white shirt and not a colored shirt with cufflinks and a dark tie. This way it looks as close to a tux as possible.

I would say that about 90% of our male guests wore tuxes and most of them already owned them. Then again, our male guests were older and that can make a difference. Few people rented.

We also noticed that people who came from out of town and had to incur the cost of travel expenses did not have tuxes. But they all wore dark suits.

Really? I asked FH if we should include attire on our invitations and he said that if it is a wedding people know that they are expected to dress up.

Does the invite say black tie optional, black tie preferred or simply black tie? I think that makes a difference.

If people knew, there would be no need to put it on an invitation. Nowadays, people wear jeans to broadway shows and the opera when in years past, dressing up was the only option. There was a time when Saturday night functions automatically meant tuxedo, but that no longer exists.

I went to 12 weddings besides my own last year. Two of them were black tie or black tie optional. The others were lovely, but there was always someone who was innappropriately dressed. Men wore button down shirts not tucked into their pants.

Nobody is asking anyone to rent or buy new clothing. I would think that most adult men would have one suit in their wardrobe. I have at least 6 dresses that I can wear to a formal event complete with shoes, handbags and other accessories. It is much more expensive to be a female than a male guest at a wedding and I am floored when men complain about it.

At my cousin's wedding many people did not dress appropriately for the occasion. Therefore, I made sure to write black tie optional.

I agree that a lot of people don't dress appropriately for formal events... sometimes you look and wonder what are they thinking to dress like that?! But, I didn't put anything about dress code on my invitations, just because I figure, they SHOULD know how to dress for a wedding, and if they don't, it's not my job to make them aware... they're the ones who will look silly and feel foolish when they see everyone else all dressed up!

If the invite says Black Tie Invited - a suit is fine. Unfortunately, if it just says Black Tie - a Tuxedo is usually required.

i didnt put Black tie on my invitation because i dont want to require people to come dressed in tuxedo's. However, i think people should know better and dress in formal wear for a wedding.

Yup: black tie SHOULD mean tux & long gown for women. Typically day-time weddings mean more casual wear than evening weddings.

I didn't make mine black tie because I want men in suits instead of tuxes.

One can always call & ask.

I totally agree with this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So many times I have gone out to buy something to wear to an upcoming wedding. Men get all upset if they can't wear the suit they already own!!!

For any black tie events
He is suppose to wear a tux and you are suppose to wear a dress is floor length.
but I am sure you won't get kick out if he only wear a dark suit or you wear a cocktail dress.
