a formal gown or dress. doesnt have to be long. i went to a black tie wedding with 400+ people and the majority of the woman had on dresses just below the knee....FH/DH should wear a tux.

A formal dress or gown -- doesn't have to be long. Most likely what you would normally wear to a Saturday night wedding. Your FH does not have to wear a tux. A dark suit and tie are FINE.
Black Tie does not carry the same affect or stigma it did years ago.

Re: Black Tie Wedding???
Is it Black Tie or Black Tie Optional?
You can go with long or short just do formal. Think Eva Longoria walking down the red carpet in a short dress....definintely do-able.
If it is Black Tie your FH should most definitely wear a tux. If it is black tie optional, a dark suit is fine.
I am planning on having Black Tie optional. I know most my family and family friends own tuxes so they get the chance to take them out, the other guys will probably wear dark suits.
I also like it for women because it kind of gives you an idea of what the style is; as oppose to wondering if something you might wear is too dressy or too underdressed, now you know, you can go to town and get decked out (if you want).
Hope this helps

Re: Black Tie Wedding???
off the internet from 2 different sites on ettiquette and fashion:
Black Tie A Black Tie invitation calls for formal attire. Men wear tuxedos, women wear cocktail, long dresses or dressy evening separates.
Black Tie:Black tuxedos for men or an elegant black suit white shirt and black necktie as long as it is formal. Women should wear formal evening or cocktail dresses
