Yea I've never been to one either, but people I have spoken to say that usually its half and half at a black tie wedding. usually older women will wear a longer dress. plus, its not a friend of mine, its FH's friend's wedding. im just a date...i hope its okay...its pretty fancy

Black tie requires pretty much anything knee length to the floor. Me personally? I would wear a different dress. But, if you have the right shoes and accessories, that dress could work.

Re: Black Tie Wedding...
did the invite say just black tie, or was it black tie optional or black tie preferred?
if its black tie optional or preferred definitely wear it...unfortunately when it says black tie many ppl will assume it means a long dress, although nowadays you'll see it a bit more mixed. I had trouble with this recently too and didnt want to go and buy a long gown, but all i did was worry i would be the only one in a short dress...luckily i found out after i worried for no reason bc it was only black tie optional.
Find out from others who are going if theyre wearing long gowns or doing more of a cocktail style dress.

I think its a straight up black tie wedding. I feel like its so rare to have a black tie wedding these days. I am just worried that I will be the only one in a short dress, but I reallllllllly don't want to wear a long dress...I look stupid in them (unless its white, of course )

i know how you feel...i went nuts with this too. I had other reasons too such as it wasnt even a sit down dinner so didnt see the point. New etiquette rules include shorter dresses in black tie bc they can be very dressy now. I am not crazy about this, i didnt put anything on my invites about the dress code...it was a saturday evening so i would think adults would know how to dress for an evening wedding, if not then they look stupid. People do this bc i guess they're worried about ppl dressing up for their wedding, but the problem is that some ppl will feel obligated to wear a long gown and then many will go out to buy one and then some men even feel the need to wear a tux and feel the need to get one although a dark suit is fine.
Ask your Dh to ask his friends what the other girls are wearing lol, i did this and it helped

Re: Black Tie Wedding...
I'd have to agree with everyone - I just went to a black tie wedding and everyone wore long dresses. I like the picture, but I think it might be a bit too much.

Re: Black Tie Wedding...
Honestly, I think its fine. I went to a black tie wedding last year and wore a stapless knee length blue dress and I was one of the fanciest people there. Some people will wear long dresses but definitely not all.

See, if it's straight up black tie, the dress should be below the knee, not above. I think it's gorgeous and looks great on you but I would def go with something below the knee. Did you buy that dress already?

Re: Black Tie Wedding...
i almost always wear short dresses to black tie weddings b/c i have an aversion to gowns. i think that anything goes in terms of length these days and short dresses are generally in style. that said, i usually make sure that my short dress is on the fancier/classier side than i would if it weren't a black tie wedding, and i agree that it shouldn't be super short (i.e. above the knee). i also notice that at black tie weddings EVERYONE seems to wear the color black. kinda weird. i went to a black tie wedding a few weeks ago and wore a bright color since its summer and i stood out like an idiot. i guess the bottom line is that you should wear something you'll feel comfortable enough in. for me, it's a yucky feeling when you show up to something feeling like you're not dressed right.
