Yes, it should be on the fancy side, but no - it does not have to be long. Lord and Taylor has some nice dresses. Jones New York has some nice styles and they are usually not that expensive.

Should be a formal dress. If you're looking for affordable - try Loehmanns or Filene's.

Generally I'd wear a floor length gown for black tie. Especialyl if it's black tie, not black tie optional, but that's just me. For black tie events I actually wear ballgowns. Jessica McClintock has some nice inexpensive stuff, and I also second lord and taylor

i thought the man wears a tux or a black suit with black tie and the woman wears an evening dress.
if you are looking for a evening dress, Estelle's in Farmingdale on Route 110. when i need to find a nonexpensive evening dress that is where i go.

I just bought a dress for a black tie optional wedding. Don't laugh but I bought it at Annie Sez! I bought a long black dress (with an a-symmetrical top-one strap) that I plan on dressing up with a nice broach and some earrings. I checked Macy's and Lord and Taylor but didn't find anything!
