I am attending a black tie wedding this summer! Do I have to wear a gown? I found a beautifiul silk strapless that goes to me knee! If I dress it up with my accessories, do you think it would be ok! All the gowns out there are prom hideous!!!

I went to a black tie wedding in a tea length dress. I think it would be fine as long as you dress it up with jewelry and maybe put your hair in a nice updo.

Re: Black tie weddings---need opinions
I was blown away when I went to a black tie event this spring. I thought black tie = floor length gown.
I saw MANNNNNNNNY women dressed in knee lenght dresses. And I'm not talking about oober dressy cocktail dresses. I'm talking really basic and simple knee length dresses.
I think it's changed a lot in recent years.... It seems far less formal. I think anything is really fair game.

I think tea length is fine. Just make sure you have nice accessories.

I'm old school, and have attended many black tie events, both business and personal.
Black tie means tuxes for the guys and long dresses for the women. Black tie optional is either a dark suit or tux for the men, cocktail or long dresses for women. White tie is super formal, white tie and tails for men, ball gowns for women.

I had a black tie wedding and I saw a lot of short dresses. The women looked beautiful so you don't have to wear a long gown. Most of the men were in tuxes and a bunch with a nice black suit and tie. Now adays it's not as formal, but still pretty dressy.

Re: Black tie weddings---need opinions
I went to a black tie wedding last month. The girls were dressed in typical wedding attire - lots of 'little black dresses,' etc. I bought a tea-length gown with crinoline under the skirt - fanciest dress I've had in YEARS - and was more dressy than about 75% of the people there. The only difference between that black tie wedding and most others I've been to was with the men... a good number of them had on tuxes, and the others all wore dark suits.

Go for a gown or a little black dress with great accessories.
