Okay my dad and I are having this HUGE debate today on xmas about what women should wear when the invitation reads 'black tie'.
He says...gowns to the floor ONLY and I say that a fancy cocktail dress is appropriate..
options and thoughts please!

I went to a black tie wedding last year and 90% of the women were in cocktail dresses. I think things have changed a bit!

I think cocktail dresses too. but I guess all depends how fancy they are. like it cant be those cute summer cocktail dresses

to me black tie means floor length gowns for women. i do feel the definition has changed so that fancy cocktail length dresses are appropriate now.

cocktail dresses too as long as they're formal... our bm dresses will be black cocktail length and we're doing black tie

i think anything is acceptable these days... but i personally would go with a long gown since thats originally what the intent was i think!

Technically black tie means floor length gowns... but things have changed and women are also starting to wear cocktail dresses... but I'm pretty sure it means floor length...
