blocking hotel rooms

can anyone explain this to me? i called the hilton in huntington and they told me in order to block off rooms i would need to know everyones plans in advance.. when and how long they're staying.. honestly.. it's not even my family what am i supposed to do call them and be like hey so for our wedding next year that you don't even know about yet can you by any chance tell me your exact travel plans?

i'm confused.. do i personally pay out of pocket to block rooms? how much do they lower the rates by if you do this.. do i even need to?

ah.. please help!

Re: blocking hotel rooms

a lot of places do not require a deposit at all to block.
others require not only a deposit, but they require you to pay for all the rooms you blocked off whether they get used or not.

definately call several places before making a final decision.
they can usually lower the prices more if you book or promise more rooms...

most places dont require for you to put down a deposit. If any rooms dont get blocked then they just re-release the rooms about a month before the wedding

That's odd, we are using the same hotel and they've been great.

It shouldn't cost you anything to block rooms at all.

We blocked off as many rooms as they'd allow us to, I think it was 20 or 25. And also a smaller # of rooms for Friday for OOT guests who will be coming to our Welcome Dinner.

You give your guests the contact info and they call up with a CC # to reserve their room.

Approx. 1 month before the wedding all the un-reserved rooms are released back into the hotel's general room inventory. Your guests can still reserve rooms, but the $$ will be higher after the room block expires.

We are using the Hilton.

From what they told us.....
Blocking 20 rooms or more - you have to secure it witha credit card
Blocking 19 rooms or less - it is called a 'room rate agreement' With this one, they are not taking rooms out of inventory. I have been told that if volume goes up and they need to rooms, I will be contacted and will either not have the RRA or I will have to secure it on my credit card. I'm hoping it doesn't get to that point.

They also provide a weblink for your guests to use (we are still waiting on ours). This way the bride/groom can monitor the amount of rooms and add more if necessary.

This is what my contract says. I didn't put a deposit to block.

I will FM you all the hotel info I have. Also, I dont have to leave a deposit but some places require you fill 50%-70% of what you block. If you dont, then you have to pay for the unused rooms. Other places just release them. They usually release the rooms a month before your wedding, so your guests have plenty of time to book!
