blocking rooms at hotels... how many?

blocking rooms at hotels... how many?

OK, maybe a dumb question. I really cannot, for the life of me, figure out how many hotel rooms we should block! I know some of FH's family will stay overnight even though they live nearby. Some of my family is coming from hours away, but I can't gauge whether or not they'll stay (some might actually drive there and back same day). I think it's totally inappropriate to ask people if they plan on staying, so how do I go about this?

TIA girls!

ETA: one other question: is it typical to go see the bridal suite before booking it or do you book it without seeing it with the attitude that a room is just a room wherever it is?? i want to know if i should set aside time to go see these hotels!

Most hotels don't charge or hold you responsible for unbooked blocked rooms, so just block as many as they let you?

really??? so i block, let's say, 20 now, and as i get more familiar with my guest list and who might stay, i can cancel some of the rooms without any penalties?

It varies by hotel but to my knowledge, I believe most hotels will reserve a certain number of rooms (20 is not unreasonable) until a certain date, and then they will no longer be reserved -- they just go back in the pool of open rooms that anyone can book. You shouldn't be charged for rooms that don't book. There might be a penalty if you dont book any, but I'm not sure.

one hotel said that there is a minimum of 10 rooms for two nights on my wedding weekend. they said that if all 10 rooms are not booked then the other guest have to pay the regular rate does that sound right??? i mean, i'm SO not sure hwo many rooms we need. it could be 5, it could be 30..... that's how clueless i am right now. but i would hate to get a discounted rate for my guests and not fill the minimum amount of rooms and have them pay full price!!

I went through my wedding guest list and counted who I thought was likely to come from OOT and stay at the hotel. As it turns out, we are going to be short and had to take a block at another hotel. Thankfully there were rooms availalbe. As for the commitment, it really depends on the hotel and how many rooms you are booking. I did a lot of research in different hotels in the area, and they all had different policies....with a lot of them you will need to guarantee a certain amount, depending on how many rooms you book.

we ended up blocking 35 rooms, 2 nights each. we have 14 booked now just from FH's family, one of my family members and one of our groomsmen. we still have a lot of OOT friends (and some other groomsmen) who have not booked yet. I don't think we have any penalty if we dont hit the full 35.

we checked out the laquinta (old wingate) and took pictures of all the rooms - we will probably block there but we def wanted to see the rooms first

I'd definitely go see the hotel first if you are not familiar with it...you dont want to be surprised the day of! We went to look at a few hotels..just wanted to make sure it was something we were comfortable with, if we were going to recommend it to people.

Was that for Woodbury Executive? That's their policy... I wasn't thrilled at all with that, plus the fact that their shuttle doesnt go to my location... I booked with La Quinta, have only 10 rooms blocked for now b/c I have no idea how many will book. They get the blocked rate regardless of how many fill... if I fill all my rooms I'm allowed to reserve more, and there's no penalty if rooms don't get booked, they just release them back to the public a month before the date.

We booked their bridal suite just based on recommendations on this website, and when we saw it yesterday for the first time we were THRILLED!! I'm really excited and think I made a good choice

Oh, and just be carefull and make sure you fully understand the terms before you block, some places DO expect you to pay 70% of the cost of the blocked rooms if they aren't booked!!

that hotel was actually the Radisson near our RH. the rate was actually pretty good in comparison to other hotels but they make you guarantee TWO nights per room. also, you have no financial responsibility for the unbooked rooms, but the other guests have to pay full price for their own if the minimum amount of rooms aren't booked. can you imagine, you think you're getting a 139 rate, show up there, and get a bill for like 200 a night. i'd be pissed!!!
