BM dress alteration drama w/poll

BM dress alteration drama w/poll

So, I got the call that my BM dresses came in! So, I called and e-mailed all of my girls. One of them e-mails me back and says that she wants to take the dress to get it altered elsewhere. The problem is, I added straps and there isn't enough materials from her dress to make them. Also, her dress maker doesn't know how the others are wearing it. Should I just let her do whatever? ADVICE!!! Please!!!!

P.s. This is also my FSIL..and her mother has been saying for months that she should do this...and I haven't gotten upset b/c I didn't think she was serious.

Also, one of my other bridesmaids is coming from CT to get it altered at the store b/c of the strap problem!

Also my SIl is pregnant with tons of issues with this dress and she is still staying with the store that we bought it from as well!

My girls all got their alterations at different places. They all needed bustles on their dresses, and they were all different. I didn't care. They all looked great in each dress. There are bigger things to worry about I think. JMHO

I'm neurotic and I'm asking all the girls to get their alterations at the same place we're getting the dresses. I don't feel so bad because the alteration cap is $45 and they got a great deal on the dresses. It's important to me that they all look the same.

I let my BMs get their dresses altered where they wanted. Besides one of my MOH's lives in Boston and there was no way I was making her come down for her fittings.

why does she want to go else where?

Re: BM dress alteration drama w/poll

I think she wants to go elsewhere b/c her mother thinks its a great idea! My whole thing is, I didn't expect her to be the person, that said she was going to do this! I figured it would be my 2 BM out of state (and it isn't!) I realize that this isn't the hugest deal in the world...but we all agreed that day that this is what we do..so, no one could get upset.

Also, I was in a BP where one of the girls took the dress elsehwere and she did look different and it created some tension.

Also, if I picked the place and something happens to the dress...then she can blame it on me!

I just wouldn't 'ruffle any feathers' if it was me! Especially since this is going to my SIL!

My BMs from NYC/LI got their alterations done at the salon, but DH's sister (in CT) and my cousin (in DE) went to salons near them. The BM dresses had a very slight train which was bustled at the reception. I gave DH's sister instructions on how the other girls had their dresses bustled and it was fine. I wouldn't worry about it as long as she goes to a reputable place.

maybe have one of your other BM dress get fitted first and maybe take a pic of it so that your FSIL can bring it with her as a guide?? i don't know--is that too much work? why do people have to be difficult--like you don't have enough going on right now!

I really wanted to get the alterations done at the same place. 2 of my BMs did but one of them asked if her mom could do her alterations. I wasn't crazy about the idea but she said her mom does that kind of stuff all the time. I have to be honest, her dress actually looked the BEST out of the three of them. It fit her perfectly and wasn't bunching or loose anywhere. I'm not sure if it was her mom's alterations or maybe the other girls weren't wearing the right kind of foundation bras, but props to my BM's mom!

I would let her get it done where she is comfortable. All in all is it a big deal if the straps are a little different? She's going to be your SIL, you don't want to start off on the wrong foot.

I told my girls to take their dresses out of the place, they were crazy expensive. I even gave them my seamstress to go to. They all stayed and got ripped off!!!!

Very well stated. I agree.

In the scheme of things I don't really think it's a big deal if she goes somewhere else. Everyone is going to be looking at you and you alone anyway!

I would let her take it where she wants to get altered. I will probably cause less tension in the long run. If there is not enough fabric from her dress to make straps you will have to order extra fabric from the company.

My girls all had their dresses altered at different places and everything was fine.

My BF dealt with the same issue. All the girls were to get straps put on their dresses and it would have been easier and more together if everyone went with the same place. Her FMIL and FSIL threw a ***** fit and said she should get her alterations done at her usual tailor. To make a long story short, my BF asked to see the dress the night before the wedding (Thank GOD she did) because the sister's dress had no straps on it but was still tailored to the same specifications as everyone else. With the previous drama the FMIL put her through my BF took it as she wanted her daughter to stand out on her day, which she totally was not going to let happen. Luckily it was early enough in the day and we were able to take a piece of scrap material to her tailor to have the straps put on... I say all of this to say, it's your day and EVERYTHING should be done to make your day as close to perfect as possible! HTH

i don't get people--why do people make things so complicated? just go w/the flow-ya know--hey but like they say--what goes around comes around.........i can't believe she didn't have straps on---i wonder what they said was their reason for not having straps on when you BF saw the dress w/o it?!

AGREE...don't stress if you don't need to. All that matters is that you look beautiful. ;)

Could the straps be added at the store without any other alterations being done? Would you be willing to offer to pay for that portion to buy 'peace of mind?' Then she could take the dress, with the straps set like everyone elses, and have it further altered wherever she wants.
