BM dress is too big!! Need advice!!

BM dresses finally came in, and one is very big! We ordered no-frills from RK so that each girl could do alterations on their own.

Each BM took their own measurements and we ordered off of the manufacturer's size chart. If the numbers were close, we ordered the larger size.

In the past few months, one BM lost a bit of weight. Now her dress is big! Very big!!

Everyone is saying better too big than too small. I'm wondering, though, is there a point when dress is too big to alter? She's OK with the fact that more alterations will be more $$...we're just not sure if the alterations are even possible

We're heading out to a seamstress later today...just wondering what I should be prepared for!! Anyone have a similar experience?????

Re: BM dress is too big!! Need advice!!

Well, unfortunately I had the same experience for my brothers wedding a few years back. The dress was A line, with a crinoline lining underneath and pleats to make it worse! I lost about 10 lbs. and the dress was HUGE on me. The alterations cost over $100...but it did fit. So it is possible...as long as she goes to a reputable tailor/seamstress...

I was told that EVERY dress can be taken in no matter how much weight had been lost. My niece was all of 11 when my sister got married & the made alterations on her dress & beleive me that was ALOT of alterations.

Re: BM dress is too big!! Need advice!!

I got a dress altered from a 12 to a 2 once and the dress was a flowy chiffon dress. There was no problem. (Long story but dress shop measured me wrong and ordered the dress way too big - I use to be really really skinny!)

All of my girls ordered from RK-no-frills and most said their dresses are huge. They have had no problems with alterations.

One BM did not go with no-frills and she fit in the 10 skirt but RK ordered her an 16 or 18 for her boobs! RK is doing the alterations and they said it shouldn't be a problem.

Re: BM dress is too big!! Need advice!!

Thanks so much for your responses. I've calmed down a little!!

It looks like alterations can be done, but will be a bit pricey, due to the amount of work. Fortunately, the dresses do not have any applique or beadwork or anything intricate to work with-just a lot of taking in.

WHEW! This is the closest that I've come to having a complete meltdown...and with all of your support, it wasn't that bad.

Thanks again!!

Anything can be done! My MOH had a dress altered from a size 14 to a size 4 by the same guy who is altering my BM dresses. He is located in Brooklyn and a little crazy but does a good job.

Re: BM dress is too big!! Need advice!!

Well I imagine the bridesmaid is Happy about losing the weight, so I imagine she rather pay extra then have lost the weight in the first place.

And I totally agree with being safe and ordering up a size, I even did it with my own dress.
good luck
everything will work out,
kimberly

Re: BM dress is too big!! Need advice!!

Thanks again, everyone. Either she'll have lots of alterations, or I'll just feed her silly for four weeks and plump her up a bit LOL.

Stef-would you be kind enough to pass along name/number of your Bklyn seamstress? I have BMs in Park Slope and Greenpoint, and I'm trying to help them find someone fairly local. Thanks!!
