I honestly don't like them. I went to Wedding Plaza today w/ a BM and I had my pics of the ones I liked and when we saw them they were ok, I guess. I honestly am not a fan of the 'bridesmaid' dresses. The whole look, the materials the blah aura they give me is just not for me.
So we thought of possibly going to say Macy's or Lord and Taylors and looking into formal dresses. Has anyone done this or heard of anyone that did this?

Cw0904, no one will bash you. Thats why there all those BM dress jokes
I will have to agree with you on this one. My MOH and I went to look and although we liked the dresses in photos online - in person her first reaction was the material is rather cheap. For the prices of many of them it is only about 20$-50$ more for some of the vera wangs - so we will probably go with those. But if I didn't find anything there I was tempted to go to either bloomies or lord & taylors and pic a laundry dress or something else- they are the same price and much better quality. At least I can justify the cost when my girls feel that these are dresses that they would wear again down the road.

I agree...so many of the popular designers just do not use good materials. In particular, the satin most of the companies use (which just happens to be what most BM dresses are made of) is some of the cheapest stuff you can buy!
There are designers that do a better job and some of the more main stream designers have alternative fabrics that are much nicer:
- Waters & Waters - Nicole Miller - Vera Wang - SeraFina
a few others.

Watters and Watters and Nicole Miller does use better fabric than say, Jim Hjelm or After Six...just make sure your girls don't mind spending a bit more money.

I am in a wedding in July and the bride bought 7 dresses off the rack at Macy's for everyone. It was much easier than going to bridal stores.

Going off the rack in the major department stores is a good option you can also try Saks. We were just talking about Macy's on the registry post, if you open a credit card you may be able to get an additional 10% off.

I would also try Bloomingdales and Lord & Taylors -they are often a little easier to work with. They also will give you 10% discount if you open a card there and - They have a better return policy than Macy's - If you and your girls change you mind down the road they will take the dresses back - macy's can be funny with returns after 30 days.

What about Ann Taylor - they usally have some nice formal dresses. Also, I think they just started a BM line.

Thanks everone for your suggestions! Phewy I hope I wasn't opening a can of worms by bringing this up. I was very dissatisfied with the 'bridesmaid' dresses. I didn't want to offend anyone that has bought them for their girls.

No one says you have to get a BM dress. I know people who buy off the rack
I see the wedding is march - I don't think you'd have a hard time finding off the rack at Ann Taylor, Barami, or somewhere like that
