So I am the MOH in my sister's upcoming July wedding. Last night at the dress fitting, we got into a discussion about us bridesmaids wearing the shawls over our strapless dresses while in the church.
The woman at the dress place insisted it was 'Mandatory as a show of respect in a church'. However, we tried them on and they look really cheesy. We're not religious, and the church doesn't seem uptight (St Rose in Massapequa). They match and came with the dress, so its not a question of money.
Ladies, do your bridesmaids NEED to wear the shawl? Did you encounter this situation and what did you do? A shawl in July, yes or no?
THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!

Re: BM Shawls: Mandatory in Church?
no, they do not need to wear a shawl. Unless your church specifically mentions this, which i dont believe too many do.

Re: BM Shawls: Mandatory in Church?
I never read anywhere in the St.Rose material about covering bare arms but I would call the church just to double check.

Re: BM Shawls: Mandatory in Church?
I've been to weddings at St. Rose and the BMs wore strapless dresses without shawls.
Whether or not it's mandatory depends on the church.

Re: BM Shawls: Mandatory in Church?
It is really up to the church the wedding is being held in. Some churches do not like even if the bride wears a strapless dress, while others do not have issues with it. Our church does not have a problem with showing some shoulder for a wedding.

Re: BM Shawls: Mandatory in Church?
st. rose isn't as strict as some other churches. the priest who is performing our ceremony used to be at st. rose and told me if my church was too strict, we could always use st. rose

It is not mandatory to wear a shawl in church, unless they ask you to or something

Re: BM Shawls: Mandatory in Church?
It depends on the church. They would have told the bride that already if it were mandatory.

Re: BM Shawls: Mandatory in Church?
In my church they dont need to wear them but they do suggest that they do if the dress is strapless. My girls are wearing them for church only.

Re: BM Shawls: Mandatory in Church?
it depends on the church... if it were my sneaky self I wouldn't even ask, bc if you show up the day of and they have a problem with it, what are they gonna do about it?

Thank you girls, you rock.
I emailed my sister a link to this thread, as 'proof' that we don't have to wear those cheesy shawls. =)

Re: BM Shawls: Mandatory in Church?
Thats what I thought too- but then I realized the shawls CAME WITH the dresses (Jasmine).
I think she was just really old fashioned- but she's giving advice to brides and I am sure most of them believe her. Thank god for LIW!

Re: BM Shawls: Mandatory in Church?
I am religious and I do respect the church, my church does not require this and the girls will not be wearing shawls and neither will I, their dress has straps, my dress does not.
