book suggestions for 15 year old

I decided to give my niece $$ for graduation...but I also want to get her some books, since she loves to read...

what do you guys think are some MUST reads for a 15 year old??? I want it to be a little challenging, too, because she is pretty bright

I was thinking...
Gone with the Wind
Catcher in the Rye
Different Seasons, Stephen King

other suggestions?

her parents would kill me if I got her forever!!! especially since she has a boyfriend...although I don't want to put ideas in her head...

I never read a tree grows in brooklyn...is it a young adult book?

Don't worry, Forever was a joke. Every generation needs to get it for themself and read it when no one is watching!!

I don't remember when I first read Tree... I always read things over so many times that I would lose track of the first time. It is definitely a YA book. You really should read it if you get bored. I still enjoy it.

How about

Jo's boys the sequel to Little Women
Lilies of the field
My lovely bones (I think that is what it is called)

There are also, the Harry Potter books
Jane Eyre
Wuthering Heights
or what about Sweet Valley High - remember those?

I was also going to suggest something from the Bronte sisters (Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights)...so timeless!!

Also, The Great Gatsby was one of my favorites!!

In my opinion, you can never go wrong with the classics...

Re: book suggestions for 15 year old

Forgive me for disagreeing with swags, but do NOT give her The Lovely Bones to read! OMG, I even had trouble reading it myself. It was SOOOOO depressing. After I read the first chapter I threw it across the room. I ended up reading the whole thing but I have to say I wasn't a big fan. It was too sad for me. A Tree Grows in Brooklyn was good, though, and appropriate for a 15 year old.

My suggestions are:

Harry Potter (if she hasn't read them already)
Anne of Green Gables series
Anything by Amy Tan (Joy Luck Club, etc.)
Stephen King's 'The Eyes of the Dragon'
Great Expectations
The World According to Garp

I'm sure there are a lot of ther great ones that she would enjoy. I am such a bookworm! if I think of any others I will post them. Good to hear there are other 'readers' out there!!

Lunatrek-- I am sorry, I never read it- I was looking at what my students were reading during sustained silent reading. If it is that depressing, then nope don't give that to her-- sorry.

What are her interests? I work in children's/y/a publishing and can probably think of some good ones.

No need to apologize, swags! I know a lot of people loved the book, it was on the bestseller list for months! I don't mind crying over a book, but this one took it a step further, that's all!

I thought of more..

'Watership Down' by Richard Adams
'The Thief of Always' by Clive Barker (I HIGHLY recommend these two!!)

and
'A Wrinkle in Time' and 'A Swiftly Tilting Planet' by Madeline L'Engle

Wow, this is making me want to go home and curl up with a good book!

the world according to garp? is it like the movie...with the bj scene?

she's pretty ecclectic - Ozzy/eminem/tongue pierced...but I know she has read Wrinkle in Time and Witches of Blackbird Pond and really liked them (a few years ago)

My grandmother gave me a college dictonary for my jr. high graduation and I still cherish it! It is something you can always use, and should always have in the house.
The Chronicles of Naria is an amazing collection. or how about a book of women's poetry.
