My BM just had her wedding and cashed a check given by a guest. It bounced and she had to pay a fee. What is the proper etiquette to deal with this?

Re: Bounced Check
I have no idea but I would want to mail the bank statement with the check to them. Not sure if that is what you are supposed to do. Maybe it depends on the person who sent it. Do you send them a thank you card if they don't respond? No clue.

Re: Bounced Check
Doesn't the bank notify the person that their check bounced? That's the time for the person to man-up and apologize to the bride plus make restitution.

Re: Bounced Check
Some people ignore those notifications, that's the only problem. The person trying to cash gets the fee! Nonsense!

Re: Bounced Check
this just happened to me with a wedding gift. i went to their bank (the person who gave me the check) and asked them to verify whether or not the funds were there to cash the check. i got the gift on november 4th, and it bounced on november 10th. i went back on the 23rd, still no luck. I'm gonna try to go back on the 1st or the 2nd (when a paycheck would likely go into the account) and try to 'verify' the funds. your bank should have sent you back what looks like a copy of the check but can actually can be used just like a check once the funds are verified. if there still isn't the $$ in there on the 1st or 2nd, then I'm gonna have my mom call (it's one of her cousins she isn't too fond of anyway).

Re: Bounced Check
This happened to me. I got my bank to reverse the fee then I looked up who’s check it was. I politely contacted the person and let them know their check bounced. They apologized and then sent me a new check and let me know when I could cash it. I don’t think someone would write you a check knowing it would bounce. For this reason I don’t have any bills automatically withdrawn from my account.

Re: Bounced Check
They will probably get hit with a bounced check fee themselves too. Probably the best way to avoid it is go to the bank that hte check was written on. But I know that's not always possible.

Re: Bounced Check
We got a check from DHs cousin that bounced... She apologized profusly, and promised she would take care of it ( send us another check plus the fee we had to pay) 5 months later, we havent even seen her ( i think she is avoiding us) lets put it this way... her TY card will just say thank you for joining us. We hope you enjoyed yourself.

Re: Bounced Check
If its a family member we'd prob have his mom or my dad say something. If its a friend then we'd prob say something. It happens, not everybody is the best with managing their checking account (in which case, I hope those ppl give cash at our wedding) LOL...

Re: Bounced Check
it happened to me after my engagement party, it is a good friend of the family but I didnt say anything. I figured they would realize or be contacted by their bank. They never said anything and Im not saying anything either, they are the nicest people and I know it wasnt on purpose.

I don't get it...why would someone write you a check if they had insufficient funds?

Sometimes people forget that they used a debit or wrote another check without documenting it. USUALLY it is an accident

Re: Bounced Check
Yes things happen but I think they should make every effort to reach out to you to apologize and make it up to you. No excuses......
