Heres the response i'm going to send to my friend who's stepping down, let me know what you think:
I feel horrible that your in this situation and the financial burden of being in my wedding shouldn't be something you should be worried about when you can't afford to pay rent. Maybe you can do something else for my wedding that won't cause a financial burden. This way you don't have to spend any $$ on a dress/shoes/shower/b-party, but can still be a part of my day. Also I will make sure joe's sister and my sister will make u just as involved with the planning of the b-party and shower as the other girls are. So basically you'll still be apart of everything with out the spending the money, ur an honorary bridesmaid. I wish you could have been a apart of my bridal party, but whats the fun of being in it if your stressed out about having to pay for things? I'd rather have you as a guest at my wedding, then a stressed out unhappy bridesmaid. So the bottomline is i'm glad you came to me now and told me this and i'm not at all offended or angry by the fact that you don't have the money to be in my bp.

heres my ex bm's respnse YAY!! thanks for understanding. if anything should change, i will definitely let you know. but as of right now, it's a major struggle. i would still love to be apart of it so thank you for thinking of me that way. and of course i will still be there to celebrate your day. and don't feel horrible about my situation. i chose this for myself and as much as i love my life right now and what i'm doing, it'll be worth it in the end for me. but right now, it's a pita. i would love to still know what the plans are and all that's going on so again, thanks for still including me. it was a hard decision to make but like i said, i don't want to say yes and then not be able to hold up my end. it wouldn't be fair to the other girls. and you look beautiful in the dress :) thanks again, love ya back!

I think that is very sweet and understanding, you are doing the right thing!
I applaude you for recognizing that it was too much for her financially. Too many brides would be 'not as understanding' and complain about their bridesmaid being selfish..etc.
That probably will save your friendship.
